Sweet Repeat

Today’s lunch was an repeat of yesterday’s feast.

Except with the awesome addition of Crofter’s Just Fruit Spreads. Strawberry and Superfruit….yum!

The strawberry tasted like a perfectly fresh berry, but slighty sweeter giving it a great flavor. The Superfruit spread tasted a lot like a blueberry jam and I loved the mix of flavors it provided. Both of these spread are smooth not chunky, which I love for toast. Not a big fan of fruit pieces in my jam, jelly, or fruit spread!  It’s great that these spreads are100% fruit sweetened and taste so good as well. It goes to show you that fruit is a sweetener on its own and that  you dont need all that extra processed sugar to have great tasting food. I can’t wait to try the super fruit spreads that Crofters has as well, flavors from 4 continents: North America, Asia, Europe, and South America. These were out of stock when we went to the store yesterday.

Yesterday had a sweet theme to it, as I received a package from NuNaturals, a leading company in the production of the natural sweetener, Stevia.

Here’s a little background info:

NuNaturals prides themselves on creating a natural sweetener out of Stevia that “has the highest quality, best taste, and a non bitterness” available out on the market. Stevia is much sweeter than regular table sugar and thus you are able to use less. NuNaturals products also have no added sugars, no calories, are vegan, and high in fiber. <- pretty cool, right?

powdery goodness

The company sent me 5 different Stevia products: their Stevia Baking Blend, Liquid Vanilla Stevia, Alcohol free Liquid Stevia, Pure White Stevia Extract, and Stevia packets. I had so many ideas for what I could use these products in and I was having a hard time deciding. I am so excited about the two huge packs of recipes NuNaturals sent along.

They have everything from pancakes to cookies to savory entrees. Can’t wait to try some of them out!

I finally decided to use some of the liquid Stevia in a smoothie. I thought blueberry would be a good flavor to use because they aren’t that sweet so I figured the Stevia would add a great flavor. I have seen Gina from Fitnessista put Stevia in her smoothies before and they always look delish! Before adding it in, I put a drop of the liquid on my tongue and let me tell you I was really surprised by the taste. I found the taste very bitter and like a fake sugar….first impression= not good. But I remained optimistic and put a few drops in my drink.

MmmmmMmmm. This stuff made the blueberries come alive. It tasted so sweet and the blueberries sweetness was completely intensified.  The Stevia was a great addition to this smoothie because it would have normally been really dull.

I learned my lesson. Stevia is not meant to be eaten straight, but when mixed with something, it acts like a perfect sweetener. Adding a nice level of sweetness, not to strong or overpowering. I am most excited to try the baking blend to make some healthy baked goods. I will definitely share them with you when I make them.

But no folks, that’s not all for the product reviews of the day. For a snack I tried a Primal Foods Meatless Vegan Jerky Strip.

I was sent two of each of their 6 flavors of jerky. The flavors are ranging and all sound great: Mesquite Lime, Teriyaki, Thai Peanut, Hickory Smoked, Texas BBQ, and Hot and Spicy.

I tried the Hot and Spicy and was really surprised by the taste and texture of these protein packed (a whopping 10! grams per strip) vegan snacks. Definitely spicy, but with this really great smoked flavor and a nice chewy texture. I have never had actual jerky but the texture of the Primal strips is what I imagine it would be like. Very enjoyable.

Each flavor is made with all natural ingredients with protein coming from soy and wheat. Evaporated cane juice is used as a sweetener and tasted great as a contrast to the hot and spicy flavor of the strip I tried. I am definitely taking these to China with  me for quick snacks ( they are non perishable so they are perfect for traveling)!

Phew! That was a lot of writing. I have been receiving so many samples lately and obviously sampling all of them so reviews are a necessity. I still have a few more to share with you all, but I will save them for another day. If anyone ever has any questions about any of the products I feature on the blog, please don’t hesitate to contact me either through the comments section or my email (proulxkr@roadrunner.com).

I just got back from a double header softball game and am wiped. Tomorrow is another early wake up call and for my prep class we are taking a practice SAT. Hello 4 hours of writing, reading, and math. :(

I am off to catch some z’s.

Peace and love,

K
