WIAW: Feasting on Favorites! {giveaway}

WOW WOW WOW. That is all I can day. Thank you so much for all the support you guys gave me on my last post! I know I asked for a little extra help, but I never knew how awesome you all could be! You really came through! I got such great feedback on the #CHANGEOURFITSPO contest and I really felt like the images had a positive impact on everyone that saw them! Couldn’t ask for anything more. So THANK YOU. Feel free to keep sharing the post and the images! The more people who are exposed to these positive messages, the better!

Today I have more good things to share! More delicious things to be specific.

You all know I am a seafood LOVER. Aficionado I like to say (haha!). But seriously, I have NEVER had a type of seafood that I didn’t like. And believe me….I’ve tried a ton. So you can only imagine my excitement when I received a BOX full of frozen fish in the mail! Seriously! It was like a dream come true.

[I love all fish. I don't discriminate. ;) ]

Sizzlefish, a company that caters specifically to health enthusiasts, fish lovers, and athletes alike, sent me a sampler pack of 7 of their most popular portioned fishes to try out! I was in heaven. Not only had a I not heard of some of these fishes before, but I was excited to see if they would live up to their freshness and taste claims since they came to me frozen!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALet me tell you, they did not disappoint. The portion sizes were perfect! Not overwhelmingly huge like some restaurant portions can be, but not teeny tiny either…just the right amount to get in a great serving of healthy fats and protein.

These are the different varieties I received and my thoughts on each:

  • catfish: meaty, juicy and similar in mild taste to tilapia
  • rainbow trout: sweet, mild fish…a little less dense than salmon and more flaky
  • atlantic salmon: tender and buttery…distinct rich, fatty salmon flavor
  • sablefish: MY NEW FAVORITE FISH! Well, second to sea bass that is! But the reason I liked it so much is because of how similar it tasted to sea bass! LIKE BUTTAH! So smooth, creamy, and delicious! Incredibly flaky as well! My only problem is that the piece was too small! I WANTED MORE. :)
  • atlantic cod: a nice mild white fish with a medium meatiness and flaky texture
  • haddock: firm, white fish…slightly similar to cod in taste but a bit more dense and subtly sweeter
  • coho salmon: less fatty tasting (even though it’s higher in Omega 3′s!) and thinner than regular salmon, but still yummy…the flavor reminded me of the type of salmon you get in a can…perfect for pairing with other flavors as the salmon taste is not overwhelming…LOVED eating the skin on this one!

Overall, the fish tasted AMAZING. It tasted much more fresh than any other frozen fish I’ve had and there were no signs of freezer burn or damage to it whatsoever. Each fillet thawed perfectly and was suitable for preparing in a number of ways! I used the grill, the broiler, a saute pan, and even a poaching method and the different fishes worked great for all the cooking methods!

I am actually thinking of ordering another sample pack! This was so awesome to have and provided so much variety to my meals. Everyday was something different and I felt like I was eating a gourmet dish every night! Quality fish fillets is something I usually reserve for a nice dinner out, but with Sizzlefish you get to have amazingly fresh, tasty food right in your own home. Really appreciative of their commitment to health and environmental sustainability as well! You can’t beat the well roundedness of this company. Thanks again, Rob and everyone at Sizzlefish!!

In my book you pretty much can’t top seafood…but there of course were some other good eats over the past week!

The Vegg sent me a packet of their vegan egg yolks to try out and I was curious to see what a vegan egg yolk was made from! Well it turns out, it’s mostly nutritional yeast! I LOVE nutritional yeast as it is so I was pretty sure I would like this stuff!

I was right! I mixed a serving up with some water and spices, covered some sliced eggplant with the mixture, and baked them in the oven! They came out incredibly crispy and with a great salty, cheesy flavor from the ‘yolks’. I can’t wait to try out some of the other recipes that came with the recipe book that Vegg sent along! So many new possibilities for nutritional yeast for me to discover! But another plus about the Vegg product is that the nutritional yeast used in it is fortified…so there are a ton of extra vitamins and minerals in it! Pretty awesome for vegans and for people who enjoy the taste of nutritional yeast! Thanks Vegg!

I loooove seafood. So much so, that it’s a guarantee if scallops are on a menu, everyone knows that’s what I’m ordering. But I also love shrimp, salmon, sea bass, cod, octopus, tuna, clams, and just about everything else. I’ve even developed a taste for caviar recently. Inconvenient as it doesn’t really fit into my monthly budget :)

All of these giveaways! Ahh…I love it. (:
My go-to cookbooks are the Real Food Daily cookbook (the restaurant here in LA is unbelievable!) and this Vegetarian Cooking for College Kids cookbook that I got years ago. The recipes are super simple which is right up my alley!

PS: I’m happy to hear that you liked Vegg! I’ve actually seen a lot of negative reviews on it so I never bought it when I was vegan.

I love Salmon, Tilapia, and Sardines the best :) Love the healthy fats in Salmon and Sardines so much!
I have been obsessed with Nutritional Yeast lately! It is so yummy and has such an interesting taste. I have been putting it in everything.
When it comes to cookbook, I usually just use them for inspiration. I never follow recipes and just have to do my own thing!

Ready for some comment love? That fish product looks really good, especially since portion sizes are a hit or miss. I end up getting Trader Joe’s and then dividing it up and freezing it.

My go to cook book would be the internet:) I find so many healthy recipes and there are tons of different websites with great ideas.

The PB&J Larabars are one of my favorites, but who am I kidding, I love almost all of them!

I usually use blogs for my recipe inspiration, but I love looking through cookbooks too, especially when I cook with my dad. I really love Veganomicon and Going Raw–even though that last one isn’t technically a ‘cookbook’, since it’s all raw recipes!

OMG Uber jealous of your fish sampler pack!! I’m so in love with fish and many of my favourites were in that sample (haddock and trout). I’m so checking out their webpage as trout is my favourite but I can never find it wild only farmed :-( so I choose not to buy it as often as I would like. Your plates always look fabulous, from one veggie lover to another ;-)
