Foods of the Moment: A little bit of everything!

Before I get into today’s post, I HAVE to mention my run yesterday! IT WAS AMAZING. 40 degree weather has never felt so good. Plus it was my first run with my new sneaks and I had my favorite podcast to listen to! A tornado of perfect conditions! Really hoping Mother Nature keeps up with these milder temps for the next week or two…the single digits are still killing me!

We’re all about food on the blog today with another installment of Foods of the Moment! Just a quick round-up of some of the foods I’ve been trying and LOVING lately! And this week’s edition has something from all different food groups…we got some protein, lots of delicious carbs, and some awesome nutrients from some power packed produce! Hopefully you get introduced to a food or product you’ve never tried before!

But before I get into that food, let’s talk about some other amazing food…namely the incredible recipes from The Oh She Glows Cookbook! I’ve had a chance to try some more of the dishes and I can tell you even more assuredly that this book is a winner. I tried the Grilled Portobella, Avocado, and Pear salad….so many amazing flavors!

And of course, it’s time to announce the winner of my Oh She Glows Cookbook giveaway! Thank you to all who entered! Head on over to the giveaway post to see if you won!

Time to get into the foodie fun!

Deland Bakery Breads and Bakery Products

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAfew weeks ago Deland Bakery sent me a HUGE package of their Gluten Free breads to try out! After raving about how delicious they were, I knew I wanted to try out more of their products! They generously sent me more breads from their Organic line as well as a bunch of their regular millet breads. Plus a few fun treats from their bakery! delandbread

Oatmeal bread: So soft, nutty, and flavorful! I loved the rolled oats on the crust and how crispy this variety got when toasted!

Vegan bread: Smaller than your typical bread slices but still packed with flavor. There was a subtle sweetness to the bread and it tasted like a fresh baked white bread that you would get at a restaurant….except a lot healthier!

Millet 12 Grain: Like a mix of millet bread and ezkiel bread! So dense and hearty….loved this one for sandwiches!

Millet Special: This one tasted like a traditional millet bread. Slightly sweet, slightly corn bread-y and very doughy and delicious when toasted.

Millet Cinnamon Raisin: No sugar added and no sugar NEEDED because the cinnamon and raisins add just the right amount of sweetness! They pair so well with the natural flavor of the millet and make this the perfect accompaniment to a sweet breakfast or ever a more savory topping like an egg or cheese!

Millet Garlic Basil: A great italian flavor to this one! The basil flavor really came out when I toasted it and I loved topping it with tomato and feta. Great for making homemade garlic bread as well!

I also got to try some of their bakery products!

The muffins tasted freshly baked and were SO DENSE and fudgy….especially the chocolate! The chocolate flavor was so rich and pronounced…it was hard to believe these were whole grain and packed with so many amazing ingredients! The carrot muffins tasted like carrot cake and I loved the bursts of flavor from the raisins that were embedded throughout! The almond granola was full of great clusters and I loved the sweet honey, maple syrup flavor. Sweet, but not overpowering and full of great nuttiness from all the almonds and seeds! The coconut was a delicious addition as well!

Crispy Green Crispy FruitOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI love adding freeze dried fruit to my Power Bowls for some extra crunch and fruity deliciousness, so I was excited to try out Crispy Green’s full line of freeze dried fruit products.

The apple and pear varieties tastes just like their fresh counterparts and I actually enjoyed the asian pears more than I like the fresh ones! The bananas were extra crispy and sweet and tasted so good in cold, creamy almond milk! The pineapple tasted just like fresh pineapple as well and was great with coconut flour for a tropical version of one of my Power Bowls! I was surprised as how much I liked the crispy cantaloupe as I am usually not a melon fan, but the flavor wasn’t too strong and I liked how light and airy the pieces were. My favorites were definitely the dried tangerines and mango! Two of my favorite freeze dried fruits and Crispy Green’s versions did not disappoint!

Frieda’s Produce friedas

Frieda’s hooked me up with some of their freshest, seasonal produce! I was so excited to get such a bounty of delicious veggies to experiment with! I received orange cauliflower, purple cauliflower, mini cauliflowers, and Okinawa sweet potatoes!

The mini cauliflowers were a new to me product and they tasted like a combination of broccoli and cauliflower. The Okinawa sweet potatoes were a new food for me as well! I had no idea they were purple fleshed so it was cool to cut into them and see such a pretty color! Very starchy and sweet!

I made a cauliflower crust pizza with the purple cauliflower and it turned blue! Pretty cool, right!?

NuZest Alkaline Protein Powder nuzestNuZest creates a line of vegetarian protein made from 100% pea protein and is totally sweetener free! Instead of adding sugar or artificial sweeteners, NuZest uses Fruit Protein to boost the protein content and add a little sweetness. I tried out all the flavors in their Clean Lean Protein line and really enjoyed them all! The Chocolate was very chocolatey, with a more dark chocolate taste than being too sweet. The Smooth Vanilla had a strong vanilla flavor that reminded me a real vanilla beans and was great for mixing into unsweetened almond milk. I loved the Creamy Cappuccino as well…it had a great mix of mocha and chocolate flavor to it! All the powders mixed very easily into the liquids I ate them with and were great for putting on top of my Power Bowls as well!

Bob’s Red Mill Coconut Flour OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAEver since the company I usually buy coconut flour from switched suppliers, I’ve been looking for brand that tastes as good as the coconut flour I first tried! THIS IS EAT! The flour is light yet has a doughy, soft texture to it. And it tastes amazing sweet! Perfect for topping my pumpkin spice smoothies with and for baking!

Have you tried any of these products?

I love coconut flour! My Whole Foods stocks the Bob’s Red Mill brand in the bulk section so I can get just what I need and save a little money.

I’ve never been able to find purple sweet potatoes but they look so good! I love trying new varieties of sweet potato because they all taste a little bit different.
