Explore Your Own Backyard: Hive Lifespan Center

After a week of food focused posts on the blog, it’s time to talk a little fitness up in here! Who’s ready?

For my next installment of Explore Your Own Backyard, I had the opportunity to check out an innovative fitness center that opened only 4 years ago here in WNY. exploreyourownbackyard

It’s called  Hive Lifespan center and they are truly redefining fitness. Hive promotes a modern fitness lifestyle and this mission is very apparent immediately upon entering the facility. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When I first drove up to Hive, I didn’t know what to expect. From the clean, professional, sleek website it seemed like I would be walking into a high end, top of the line fitness center. And it turns out, I was right! The minute I walked into Hive I felt like I was transported to a west coast workout facility where celebrities and famous trainers would work out! The modern look of everything, open spaces, and gorgeous front lobby made this feel like anything but a place that you come to sweat! It felt like a spa.

Which I should mention, THEY HAVE. Full spa services, as well as an RD on staff, physical therapy, and nutritional consults! It’s a one stop shop for all things healthy living!

Upon registering my class (I was signed up for an interval training class from 6-7), I met Chris who is the owner and founder of Hive. He was very friendly and welcoming and I couldn’t wait to dive right in and see what their facility was all about!

Everything sounded delicious and very healthy!]

My class ended up being pretty small (only about 5 people including the instructor), but it was nice to have a lot of room to spread out. Even though the class was scheduled for an hour, we were done in about 40 minutes. But that was fine with me! I pushed myself and felt like I got a great workout! The days of working out for ‘time’ as opposed to ‘quality’ are long gone for me.

The instructor was great! Very high energy and she said a lot of the moves would be similar to those done in the Insanity workout series! I was excited to hear this because I am very familiar with those workouts and figured I’d be able to follow along pretty well.

The max interval workout was broken down into 6 parts:

  • a warm up
  • dynamic stretching
  • block one-plyometrics
  • block two-strength
  • block three-agility
  • abs and stretching

Overall it was a great class that could be adaptable for any fitness level because there were modifications given and you really decide how much or littler effort you put in. Usually, I’m not a huge group fitness fan, but I have to admit this class was pretty great! I felt motivated by those around me, I loved having the mirrors to check form, and the class FLEW by. Seriously, it felt like I was there for ten minutes!

After the class, Chris showed me around the space a little more! The facility is outfitted with top of line equipment and there is a ton of room for people to spread out and do their own thing. They focus a lot of functional fitness and have tons of equipment like: TRX cables, free weights, dumbbells, and even a Jacob’s ladder! One thing that Chris said to me that really stuck out was that Hive isn’t in the business to ‘sell memberships’, they’re here to ‘sell fitness’. It’s not about making money for the people at the Hive, it’s about about improving the health of the community one person at a time. I love that!

hive4Looking at their schedule, there are a TON of other classes I would love to try! Most of them are unique to  Hive and sound so cool. I definitely hope to go back someday to do some more exploring. :)

Thanks for welcoming me in to your facility, Chris!

My fun workout at Hive inspired me to create a new challenge for all of you! I even used some of the moves that we used in my interval training workout!

mixitup1000rep

The challenge of this workout is to complete 100 reps of each exercise for a total of 1000 reps when you’re totally done! You can split it up any way you’d like, by 5s, 10s, 20s, or even 50s! Whichever way feels easiest for you to complete the whole thing! It’s certainly a tough one, but it feels great to get it all done.

Let me know if you try it for yourself!

Does you city have any innovative fitness facilities?

Are you a group fitness fan?

What’s the most unique group fitness class you’ve ever tried?

WOW! I mean WOW that place looks AWESOME!! I wish I could attend a class or 2 or 3 there. We do not have any new fitness facilities YET but they are building a new Wegmans coming in 2015 and LA Fitness is coming right behind it. I love this philosophy “Hive isn’t in the business to ‘sell memberships’” that is what it should be all about. In time the people and $$ will come but not until lives are changed for the better. Keep doing what you are doing. Tell them we could use something like this in Owings Mills, MD. :-)

That fitness center is beautiful! You’re right…it looks just like a relaxing spa. Your 100 rep workout scares me…just enough that I think I might want to try it out tomorrow. Happy Sharefest!
