New Year, new you? How many times have we heard that dated, cliché phrase?!
I am SO over it. But unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere, anytime soon. So I think it’s time to take back the ‘New Year, new you’ mentality and use it for something positive! Forget weight loss, dieting, toning up, or leaning down…let’s make the ‘new you’ part be a refocusing on SELF-CARE.
The holiday season is a hectic time for EVERYONE. Life gets busy…with work, with family obligations, with events, and everything in between. You’re running all around, committing yourself to all sorts of things, and sometimes (most times!) your self-care routine can get disrupted or fall by the wayside completely. Well what if we used the New Year to get back on track with taking care of ourself and prioritizing our personal needs?
Today I am going to highlight some lesser thought of ways to start up your self-care regimen again. Yes, there’s always yoga, journaling, meditation, and things like that…but we’re all aware of those. I’m going to discuss simpler things…the “boring self-care” activities (if you haven’t checked out that instagram account, DO IT!) that seem so small yet really mean a lot in the grand scheme of our day-to-day lives.
Soothe with Self Massage
If I ever win the lottery, I will make it a point to schedule myself a massage weekly. Heck, maybe even twice a week! They are just SO DARN GOOD for you. Relaxing, rejuvenating…for the body AND the mind. Until then, I’ll stick with the free option: self massage. Self massage is one of my favorite self-care techniques that you can try for relaxation or to soothe achy muscles. Just like a regular massage, self massage relaxes muscles and releases tension, increases blood flow and oxygen, reduces blood pressure, stimulates energy pathways, increases flexibility, alleviates headaches, releases endorphins, and boosts your immune system. I do it regularly just using my hands, but another technique I’ve been loving it using my Waterpik: PowerPulse Massage Shower Head!

Get in Some Movement
As I mentioned, we ALL get busy during the holidays. This can mean that things like workouts or our regular daily activity gets put on the back burner. Coupled with the fact that it’s winter and motivation to get outside or go the gym is low, staying active or getting back into activity can be hard. But it doesn’t have to be! Don’t make huge goals. In fact, you don’t even have to do planned workouts…just focus on fitting SOME sort of movement into your everyday. For some people setting a step goal helps with this. A little bit of physical activity everyday boosts your mood, produces natural endorphins, fights SAD (which runs rampant this time of year), and overall just makes you happier (and healthier!). It’s truly one of my favorite forms of self-care.
Boost Your Immune System
Tis the season for colds and flu, am I right?! And with so many holiday celebrations, there’s not doubt you’ve been around your fair share of germs. Time to do all you can to bolster that immune system!

Take Care of Your Teeth
Oral health? Dental care? How boring, right?! WRONG. It’s that kind of thinking that makes people forget how important taking care of your teeth is. After the holidays, when we’ve all had our fill of cookies, candy, and plain old sugar, it’s important to get back on track with daily brushing and flossing…or maybe even UPGRADING your usual oral care routine.
