A roundup of fun fall activities for your family and friends to do this season! Stay active, stay healthy, and enjoy this time of year for all it has to offer.
Summer is surely over, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop staying active like you were when the weather was warm! In fact, fall is a great time of year for events that secretly get you moving while celebrating the season.
Whether you know it or not, your own hometown is probably a GOLD MINE for fun fall events and activities. I used to always want to get out of Buffalo as soon as the weather started to chill a bit, but now I’ve learned to appreciate it for the all the season has to offer. Sure, winter is not my favorite, but I am pretty darn lucky to live in a place that’s temperate and has changing seasons! I get to see a wide range of colors and landscapes, experience different weather patterns, and enjoy different seasonal activities.
Staying active when the weather starts to change can be a challenge for some, so I’ve rounded up some of the best (and most seasonably appropriate!) ways to enjoy the season while still staying healthy with your family!
Go apple or pumpkin picking
Climbing apple trees and lifting heavy pumpkins off the ground can be a great way to get outside and get active during the fall! Not only do you get a bounty of fresh fall foods to take home, but also you’re able to spend time with family and friends while moving your body. If you’re local to Western New York, check out Blackman Homestead Farm for apples or The Great Pumpkin Farm for pumpkins.
View the fall foliage from up close
Forget the foliage in your front, get up close and personal with the good stuff by taking a drive out into the country for a hike or nature walk! Breathe in the cool air, soak up the crisp scents, and look in awe at the amazing colors around you. Don’t forget your sweater, boots, and a picnic lunch to enjoy on your day out! If you’re local to Western New York, check out Tifft Nature Preserve which is open all year long to visitors and has tons of wildlife to see or traverse the beautiful trails up at Hawk Creek Preserve.
Take a haunted walking tour
Walking tours are a great way to see your city and get on your feet. This time of year a lot places offer haunted or ‘spooky’ walking tours that feature the scariest places in the area. Book a tour with your friends and prepare for a night of thrills, chills, and fun! A perfect way to get ready for Halloween, too. If you’re local to Western New York, check out Haunted History Ghost Walks!
Register for a fall 5k or Turkey Trot
Fall is PRIME running season. The weather is perfect and the races are bountiful! Sign up for a fun fall 5k or Turkey Trot to give you something to train for throughout the season. You’ll fall in love with the racing environment and may even discover a new passion for running. Lots of races have themes, cool prizes, or costume options this time of year! If you’re local to Western New York, check out the Jack o’ Lantern Fall Classic 5k or YMCA 8K Turkey Trot around Thanksgiving.
Transform TV time
The return of fall tv favorites is a great time of year for entertainment and pop culture buffs! However, don’t let your screen time become sitting, sedentary time. Instead, use your favorite shows as a good distraction and reward while fitting in fitness. Do 10 push-ups at the mention of a certain word/phrase, jumping jacks during commercial breaks, or themed workouts based on your favorite characters. Here’s a few ideas for your next at home, tv-watching workout.
As you can see, there are tons of ways to stay active and healthy even when the seasons start to change! Fall is definitely one of my favorite times of the year in my hometown. Seeing the leaves change colors, enjoying all the seasonal foods, cozying up with my fireplace on cool night, and breaking out all my fall apparel. I especially love treating myself to a new pair of fall boots to wear for all these fun activities. Recently I got a pair from Earth Shoes and that are just perfect for active living, yet cute, comfy, and stylish for the season.
I especially love these shoes because of the brand itself. Earth was founded by a yoga instructor who set out to make shoes that made total body wellness their priority. Wellness really does start from the ground up. To walk tall literally and figuratively, someone must feel comfortable and grounded in their footwear. Aside from supporting environmental programs like their ‘Plant a Tree on Earth’ campaign, the company also produces shoes that are as functional as they are stylish. My boots have a padded heel to reduce shock, a reinforced arch to stabilize my foot, and cushioning for extra support. I absolutely love the look of them too and have warn them for all the activities I highlighted in this post!

Cute shoes! My favorite Fall activity would have to be viewing the Fall foliage. Just walking around neighborhoods enjoying the nice crisp and cool air is the best.
Thanks! Walks in the Fall are the best!!
my favorite fall activity is hiking! 🙂
Love fall hikes!
I LOVE walking outside in the fall, and these boots like perfect boots to do that in; I love how they look stylish and a bit rustic. I’m not quite a super stylish girl, but I love boots that are a bit rustic.
Me toooo! Fall nature walks are the best!!!
Hi Kaila,
I love those shoes. Great tips to stay active – sounds like fun. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!
Thanks Marla!
Chilly mornings do often tempt me to just stay inside under blankets and move as little as possible, but I know always feel so much better if I just get out there and embrace it! Chilly hikes that warm up as you go are one of my favorite things, and I love the apple/pumpkin picking idea too 🙂
I like the chill in the air for a morning run…wakes me up! But as soon as that chill turns frigid I am no longer a fan of fall/winter! LOL
I love going on hayrides, especially at night. I’ll take them haunted, or just plain with the kids.
Sounds fun!!
What lovely ideas. I particularly like the thought of a haunted walk. Perfect for October!
Thanks Jackie!! Enjoy the ideas!
Our evening walks are longer and more enjoyable as the weather cools.
Sounds so nice! 🙂
Great tips! I especially like looking at fall foliage but it’s also fun to walk through a neighborhood and observe their holiday decorations. You have more time to look and appreciate than when you’re flying by in the car! Thanks for the inspiration! Blessings, Janet
Truth! Fall walks are so so nice!
I like to go for a walk with my husband in the fall.
That sounds lovely!!!
I like raking leaves and playing in them with family.
Always a fun time!!!
My favorite fall activity is ‘falling back’ in time and gaining that extra hour.
Haha! Love it!
Ooh I like the TV suggestion! I’d have to choose a really obscure word though because I’m not sure I’d get through all ten push ups! I definitely get less motivated to be outside when the air turns chilly. Thanks for the tips 🙂
So welcome!!
My favorite fall activity is going for a ride in the car and looking at all of the leaves changing color. The colors are amazing, it so so very pretty. My next favorite activity is going to all of the fall festivals and hay rides.
Big fan of fall festivals too!
Kaila, I hae already started on the list and I have even roped my daughter to come join me! Not bad for a LOL of 62 years young! {LOL Stands for little old lady!}
I am so happy you’re gonna try them all out!! Enjoy yourself!
My favorite fall activity is harvesting the last of my bounty out of the garden!
Oh yes that is the best!!
My favorite fall activity is hiking because there are no bugs and the colors are so pretty! When it’s raining I like to hang out with the kitties at home and watch the leaves fall.
Yes I love hiking in the fall as well! Perfect weather and scenery!
Kaila, first off, all of these activities sound like a blast. Great way to enjoy yourself while getting your steps in. And I love the boots! I have entered and wanted to thank you for the opportunity! Would love to sport a pair and feel good while getting out and about!
So welcome! Good luck in the giveaway!!
These are great tips…we love wandering through the pumpkin patches this time of year! Thanks so much for joining us at Share The Wealth Sunday!
So welcome! Thanks for hosting as usual!!
Living in the mountains, there are a few of these that we can do. We love going offroading with the UTV on the forest trails – it’s beautiful!
Oooooh off roading sounds so fun!
We farm so my favorite fall activity is harvest time. 🙂
Those boots are sooo cute! Perfect for fall and I love this list. Thanks for linking up to Best of Blogs again. LOVE your new blog design. So sleek!!
Thank you so much! I love it!
