First Cooking Recollections
Stir up some of your earliest culinary recollections. Did you stand at your grandmother’s elbow to learn to cook? Or did you learn by stumbling through a cookbook by yourself? Share a healthy recipe and the accompanying story about one of your first cooking memories.Immediately when I read this theme, a memory conjured up for me that I still cherish to this day. It doesn’t have to do with cooking exactly but it certainly has to do with eating, fun food, and sharing a special moment with my mom.
You see, when I was little for a treat we would go to Starbucks together for one of their famous Black & White Cookies. I don’t even think they sell these anymore (which is sad!), but I can remember the taste and texture so distinctly.
My mom and I would settle into a booth, her with a warm caramel macchiato and me with a hot chocolate. We’d place the cookie on top of the bag that it came in and she’d let me break it in half so that we each got some of the black and the white part. I was never able to break them evenly and she ALWAYS let me have the bigger half. What are moms for, right?
She’d sip, I’d sip. We’d chat. We’d each break off bits of the soft, cakey cookie topped with the most delicious vanilla or chocolate icing.
Now don’t get the wrong impression. These cookies weren’t gourmet. They probably were made en mass somewhere and shipped in to the individual Starbucks locations. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t delicious and very enjoyable! And more than that, they represented time together. Just some fun girls’ time between my mom and I for us to chat after school or on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
These cookies meant more than just a sweet treat. They symbolized a bond between my mom and I that we’ve always shared…our love of togetherness AND our love of food! Because that’s one of the little acknowledged powers of food. Sure it’s delicious, nourishing, and pleasurable…but it’s also a means for connection.
My mom instilled a love for food and cooking in me from a young age and obviously it’s stuck until today! We were so bummed when Starbucks stopped selling the cookies, but by then we had already established a wonderful tradition of bonding over food and culinary adventures.
Enjoying these cookies together truly is one of my earliest and favorite childhood foodie memories. That’s why today’s Copycat Starbucks Black & White Cookie recipe is dedicated to my momma! When it comes to my love of food I can truly say ‘I got it from my momma!’. 🙂
- 25 grams chickpeas
- 3 tbsp gluten-free oat flour
- 1 tsp coconut flour
- 2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp vanilla bean powder
- ¼ tsp baking powder
- ⅛ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cocoa powder + 1 tsp water
- 2 tsp vanilla protein powder + 2 tsp water
- Preheat oven to 350. In a food processor combine chickpeas, applesauce, and vanilla. Mix the chickpea mixture with the remaining dry ingredients until a soft dough forms. Shape the dough into a circular, flat cookie and bake on parchment paper for 10 minutes. Let the cookie cool completely before topping each half with the chocolate and vanilla frostings.
Soft, dense, cake-like cookies topped with creamy frosting in both chocolate and vanilla flavor. Is there anything more magical?
The best part is, this cookie is SINGLE SERVE, so you don’t have to make a ton at once, and the resulting cookie is HUGE! We’re talking a cookie the size of your hand, people. They also happen to be vegan, gluten-free, high protein, and sugar-free as well!
Everyone can enjoy these favorites of mine and get a small taste of a cherished memory I have from childhood. Enjoy, friends!
