Five Things Friday

Your regularly scheduled Lend a {Healthy} Hand round up will be back next week, but this Friday I had a few things I needed to share with you all. So I thought it would be best to take part in one of the Friday link-ups that take place all over the blog world each week! All of this is pretty much totally random, but it’s all little tidbits I’ve been meaning to share. So an ‘all over the place’ post is exactly what was called for!

And Friday seems like the perfect day for it. Five Things Friday

1. I met my idol. Five Things FridayLast weekend was pretty much the best weekend of my summer life. Not only did I get to cross a few things of my bucket list, but I got to MEET (and hug!) my idol. If you’ve been reading for a while you know that I am a big comedy fan. More specifically, a Pete Holmes fan. He’s the first comic that I really ‘got in to’ and from there my love has only grown and grown! I love comedy podcasts, comedy shows, and anything that gives me a good laugh. Last time Pete was in town I was leaving for the Philippines and I was SO UPSET I couldn’t see him live. Then when he got his own TV show I figured he wouldn’t be back out on the road for a while. But earlier this year his show (sadly…) was cancelled and that meant he would be touring again! When I saw Buffalo show dates, I grabbed up tickets in five minutes! Five Things Friday Well last Saturday was the big day. We had AMAZING seats, I was able to talk to Pete a little bit during the show, and afterwards I ever got to MEET him (and give him the gift I picked up for him!). I was a little nervous that the show wouldn’t live up to my expectations (you never know how people are going to be in real life compared to how you think of them), but it exceeded my wildest dreams! I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

2. My exercise is changing again. Five Things FridayAfter more than 2 months away from my normal exercise routine, I am FINALLY starting to feel more comfortable with working out again. No compulsions or obsessions, just overall active living for enjoyment and health! With that said, there are some changes that are going to be happening yet again with my exercise routine. Sadly, this week my unlimited monthly yoga pass that I bought in July came to an end. As much as I’d like to buy another, I just can’t justify the costs.

$99 dollars a month is NO JOKE. Especially for a college student and especially when my gym membership only costs $20 dollars a month. As I had my last practice this week, I already began to miss class the moment I stepped off my mat. Sure I can still practice on my own, but it’s not the same. I am going to miss the teachers, the heat, the communal feel, the words of wisdom….everything! I am hoping I’ll still be able to get to a class a few times a month if I have some extra money for a drop in class.

For now though I am going to continue focusing on strength training with a little bit of cardio added back in. No running just yet, but I am going to finish out the rest of the year with the gym membership I have. But my time in the gym will be very limited. No more than a half hour of cardio and no more than a half hour of weights. I am limiting myself for now because I want to remain in control and stay secure with my new relationship with exercise. If things change, I’ll adjust. For now I feel totally comfortable with this plan though! The one thing I am mad about is the lack of yoga that’s going to be in my life. Why do the things that are so good for you in life have to cost so damn much!?

3. I’ve been watching some good and bad things lately.  Five Things Friday The Good-

Summer TV is not known for being the best entertainment. But I’ve found a few gems that have really sparked my interest this season! Chasing Life on ABC Family, Tyrant on FX, and The Killing (which I am starting from season 1 on Netflix) have been my nightly watches lately!

(Honorable mention for ‘the good’ goes to Chef!! If you haven’t seen this movie yet….DO IT!) Five Things Friday The Bad-

This includes a movie AND a TV show because I want to prevent you all from wasting your money at the theatre! I saw Lucy last weekend and it was HORRIBLE. After from good reviews from family and friends, as well as some positive remarks on Rotten Tomatoes, I thought it would be pretty good. Nope. Nada. Not at all. Really cheesy, hardly any plot, and SUCH A BAD ENDING. If you’re curious, wait for it to come out on demand/DVD.

And The Strain. I guess I can’t say this is all bad. But as of now I don’t know how I feel about it. It’s a new sci-fi ish show on FX based on a book series by Guillermo Del Toro. It’s got a lot of different plot lines going on right now and some of the story lines seem pretty far-fetched and weird. I’m giving it a chance though! Hey, I’ve already watched 4 episodes so I feel like I have to stick it out now!

4. There was a HUGE fire in my neighborhood last weekend!  Five Things Friday If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw my coverage of it! It was crazy to say the least! So much smoke in my neighborhood. The scariest part about it was that the area I live in is heavily trafficked and populated. I was so surprised (and happy!) to hear no one got hurt. They still don’t know exactly what caused it but the house is a total loss. Over half a million dollars in damages and over 300,000 dollars in lost property. I feel so bad for the tenants that lost all there belongings. On the bright side, the BFD did an amazing job to securing the area (there was a 5k race going on right when this happened!) and putting out the flames extremely quickly!

5. I’ve recently discovered some awesome new podcasts!  Five Things Friday

I’ve talked about my podcasts loves on the blog before (usually they are mostly comedy related!), but every so often I stumble upon a few that aren’t necessarily comedic but still spark my interest. The latest I’ve been listening to are Freakonomics and The Moth! If you like Stuff You Should Know, you will definitely like Freakonomics! It’s from the guys that wrote the book of the same name and it covers a wide range of interesting topics! If you like This American Life, you’ll like The Moth. It’s very similar in that it is all about everyday people telling unique stories about their lives.

That’s all for today! Happy Friday, friends!

What podcasts are you listening to lately?

What TV shows have you been watching this summer?

Any famous people you’d like to meet in person?

Have a great weekend!

I’ve been into podcasts recently, for the first time ever! I have to check out some comedy ones, because mine are mostly health related or stories, like This American Life and Strangers No More. You should check that one out if you like The Moth.

Also, crazy about the fire in your neighborhood. I’m glad the tenants were okay–I hope everyone was!

I love podcasts while walking or driving! My favorites are the Wellness Wonderland & Jess Lively’s podcast – inspirational and often wellness focused (from a healthy, love-based mindset – not fearful).

I’ve downloaded a whole lot of podcasts in an effort to teach myself Spanish while I commute to work! (The term “work” is relative since I’m not being paid, but here’s to learning!) I’ve gotten nowhere with it thus far because I keep listening to music and singing along instead. One of these days!!

How exciting Kaila meeting your fave comedian. I have not really been listening to pod casts, but I have kids I get to listen to all day LOL. Summer tv really sucks, however I am a fan of the Bravo channel and I get sucked into those darn Housewife shows {I just can’t help it} :)

I don’t watch anything “live” any more … I only watch shows on the TV in my gym and it doesn’t have a cable connection, just a DVD/Roku (for Netflix/AmazonPrime). I did get into “The Killing” and watched all three seasons of that. Did the fourth season just come available, seems like I heard that… Haven’t watched it yet but plan to. All other shows I hear people talk about, I just wait until they are easily streamable :)

$99 a month does seem awfully expensive to me!

I haven’t gotten into podcasts, but love a good comedian (JIm Gaffigan, Brian Regan are a couple we like). I’ll have to check your guy out …

I keep telling myself to tune into podcasts but I always forget–thanks for the recommendations. Going to make myself another note now.

Also I’m so sorry to hear about the fire in your neighborhood. That’s crazy! But thankfully no one was hurt. It’s sad for all the loss though :(

And awesome you were able to meet your comedy idol. I remember years ago when I met Dane Cook and totally geeked out. But he was very sweet in person (even though he DID give the shocker in our picture together. Sigh).

I love the Moth and Freakonomics! I am a huge This American Life fan + Third Coast Audio Festival and Snap Judgement. A new segment I like is called Death, Sex and Money from WNYC.

Have you checked out any online yoga classes? There are some good ones that are free/cheap and pretty good. Also, any groupons in your area for other yoga studios?? In Chicago there are so many options. I am spoiled. Are there any classes you can take at school?

Oh my…I would LOVE if yoga was offered at my school!! Unfortunately it’s not :(

I loooove this American life too!! So good! I’ll have to check out that other one you suggested!

Oh jeez, fires are so scary an intense! I am so happy to hear no one was hurt and that the BFD was able to get everything under control!

When Jimmy and I toured the house we live in now (when we were thinking about buying it) there was a fire one street over. We were so freaked out! One person did pass away, but the other people in the house were okay. It was really sad, but it could have been a lot worse.
