A “get to know the girl” behind Healthy Helper Q and A post with questions from readers and followers all across the world! Read on to learn more about me and my life.
Well friends, I promised a Q and A post and here it is! It took me a while to go through all the questions I received but I think I pretty much covering everything I was asked over the past week.
Some questions were repeats or pretty similar so I combined a few and didn’t include others! But like I said, they are pretty much all here and I am excited to share some things about myself and my life that you might know just from reading the blog or following me on social media.
The questions are in no specific order and sort of jump around from topic to topic! Hope you don’t mind the format. Actually, it was sort of fun for me to answer them without some sort of pattern or structure. Kept things interesting if you know what I mean!
Anyways, enjoy the post, friends! And if you have any more questions you’d like to ask, never hesitate to email me, send me a message, or leave a comment here on the blog! I love chatting with you all on a more personal level.
What are you going to grad school for and where do you go?
I am currently attending grad school at the University of Illinois for Health Communications. The program is all online, so I am able to stay in Buffalo while I work thru it for the next two years. It’s a year-round program so I go to school during the summer months.
What do you do for a job?
I currently work 3 different jobs (I am a healthy living blogger, run my own virtual assistant business, and am the Social Media Manager at Delighted By Hummus) but will be transitioning into a more full-time position at one of them. I can’t go into details on that bigger position just yet since the details are still being worked out, but it will be my FIRST full-time position and will involve monthly travel (which I am SO excited about). It’s also with a company I am super passionate about working for….so good things all around!
Any tips on meal prepping?
To be honest, I don’t do much meal prep. I used to do more, but as I’ve gotten busier over the years it has just sort of fallen to the wayside. I actually ENJOY cooking in the moment for meals and such. It’s cathartic for me and a nice break in the day from work and other obligations. If I do meal prep, I’ll usually pick a day and do a few different things at once. For example, I’ll make a batch of burgers or a few different baked good snacks to have on hand throughout the week! Sorry I can’t be of more help.
What’s your favorite city you be visited and why?
In the US: I LOVE LOVE LOVE Boston. It’s just everything I love about a big city. Walkable, active living is easy there, so many good restaurants, fun things to do, close to the water, lots of activities going on, a young population, SO MUCH HISTORY. I could go on and on about it, but overall, I just LOVE the vibe.
In the WORLD: Amsterdam. I can’t even pin point why and I didn’t even think it would be one of the highlights of my trip to Europe last year…but it really was. It was so so amazing and definitely one of my favorite stops on the whole trip. Such a unique, vibrant place.
What was your favorite Halloween costume you ever dressed up in?
OMG this brings up SO MANY MEMORIES from childhood! I’ve always LOVED Halloween and definitely participated waaaaay past the years it was probably acceptable to. Some memorable costumes include: Glinda the Good Witch (HANDMADE by my amazingly talented mom!) and a 60’s Hippi with one of my life long best friends (HUGE AFROS included!).
What would your LAST MEAL be?
Like death-row meal? Hmmmmm, that is a tough one. There are so many foods I absolutely love and would consider favorites. But if I really had to pick just one meal, I’d throw it back to childhood and pick something that I grew up eating with my family. So many memories and good feelings come up when I think about this meal. I’d go with my grandma’s homemade sauce…which she still makes EVERY WEEK to this day. Complete with homemade meatballs, sausage, and crusty Italian bread! Nothing better.
How many miles do you run per week?
As I’ve said in the past, I am THE WORST runner when it comes to having an actual training plan, logging routes or miles, doing speed work, or anything of the sort. So, it’s probably not hard to believe that I don’t track my weekly mileage. Honestly, I have NO idea how much I run weekly. Heck I don’t even have a plan for how much I’ll run on a given day. The ONLY thing that’s planned and stuck to during a training cycle for me is my weekly long run. That’s it.
You moved AGAIN? What prompted the move and where are you living now?
Yup! I moved into a two-bedroom BRAND NEW apartment in my old neck of the woods. I didn’t have to move for any specific reason and actually liked where I was living. But the opportunity to move into a bigger space with a roommate arose for about the same price I was paying before, so I JUMPED at the chance. So far, I am so happy with this choice! I love being in my old neighborhood.
If you could eat ONE meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This changes ALL the time depending on what meal I am hooked on lately. Right now I am loving simplicity. My favorite meal as of late is a turkey/chicken burger with ketchup and mustard (has to be both), a BUTTLOAD of kabocha squash, and roasted veggies. So easy to make, so satisfying, and I am literally ALWAYS in the mood for it.
What’s your absolute favorite food?
No shame…kabocha squash. Hands down.
If you could go back and change just one thing about your life, what would it be?
I am sure I could think of something more important, but since it’s still on my mind as I write this…my race last week in Erie, PA. It was the worst RUN of my life….ever. I’ve never felt so terrible doing something I love so much. Thank goodness, I was with friends while it happened.
If you could only do one exercise/workout for the rest of your life what would it be?
Running. Long distance running is my favorite.
If you had to choose one “junk” food to eat every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I try not to think of any foods as “junk” versus “healthy”. All food fits and all food has a place in a balanced diet. However, to play along with the question I would say fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. Specifically, my grandma’s. Are we sensing a theme here with the grandma foods? She makes the BEST stuff.
How did you get into running to begin with?
I started running at age 13 when I joined my middle school cross-country team on a whim! Fell in love with it then and have been running since.
Any advice for incoming college freshmen?
GRADES AREN’T everything (they’re important, but cut yourself some slack). Get involved on campus. Introduce yourself to as many people as possible. PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE. Make time for other things besides schoolwork…you need it for your mental health. Take advantage of on campus activities…there’s usually lots of free stuff. 🙂
What’s your favorite book/movie/singer/YouTube channel?
Book: changes often…love memoirs though (especially ones by my favorite comedians) Bossy Pants by Tina Fey comes to mind at the moment!
Movie: I LOVE movies. Picking a favorite of ALL time is too tough. I’ll pick a recent favorite and also one that I can ALWAYS watch whenever it’s on. Recently LOVED… As for one I can ALWAYS watch when it’s on? Remember the Titans…don’t ask me why! LOL
Singer: Can I do a band? Forever and always The Beatles.
YouTube Channel: I subscribe to A LOT…currently loving Erik the Electric!
If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?
The Great Wall of China. I’ve climbed it…but I would LOVE to do a marathon there.
What’s your go-to ‘cheat meal’?
I don’t do cheat meals. I just eat.
We are all constantly growing an evolving as people, where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
I would like to see myself still working a job (or jobs) that I love, traveling frequently, making amazing memories with friends and family, running marathons around the world, having graduated from grad school, and being happy and content with who I am as a person.
What is your earliest memory of what you wanted to be when you grew up?
I think the first time I was asked was in Pre-K! I said archaeologist. SO RANDOM. Probably inspired by a recent trip to the science museum!
If Ella could talk, what is one thing you think she would say to you often?
That she loves me and that I am enough as a person just for being her mom.
Is there a motto, quote or phrase that really means a lot to you?
Yes. But I am not going to share it right now because I plan on getting it tattooed on my forearm later this month. Once I do, I will share what it is and the meaning behind it.
If fear, doubt or hesitation didn’t exist, what is one thing you would LOVE to do?
Well, I would have said skydiving…but my best friend and I have plans to do that this summer…soooo I have to pick something else. I would say, have the guts to be 100% myself in front of others 100% of the time. There is so much I hide/change/cover about myself for fear of judgement and ridicule (since I’ve experienced so much of it my whole life), but being 100% me all the time would be blissful.
What qualities do you value most about yourself? What qualities do you look for in other people?
I like how much I care about others. I like that I am a good friend. I like that I have strong will power and determination. I like that I can empathize with others and what they are going through. I look for these same qualities in others as well as humor, compassion, loyalty, and being non-judgemental.
What does the “perfect” day look like to you?
Waking up early, snuggling with Ella, going for a run, getting a lot of work done for my various jobs, eating delicious fresh food, spending time with my best friend, seeing my parents for a bit, catching up on my favorite shows, and ending the day with a yummy snack in bed.
Does your whack job best friend really kiss your Boston Marathon medal?
Hi Heather! 😉 And yes…yes she does.
How do you move from running 10ks to half marathons and above?
I don’t have any specific training plans or methods to recommend as I am not a certified running coach. However, I would just say to gradually increase your mileage week by week and DO YOUR RESEARCH! There are some great free resources online to help you start running longer distances/higher mileage.
What’s something everyone knows about you in real life but your blog followers might not?
You guys know A LOT about me actually. It’s pretty crazy!! Something you might now know though is that I acted professionally from the ages of 7 to 17 in theatre productions/commercials/short films while growing up. I had to miss A LOT of school for my ‘work’.
How did you increase mileage so quickly after coming back from your injury?
Followed my doctor’s order, did weekly PT, did my PT exercises religiously every day, and followed a “return to run” plan that my PT created for me with slow increases over time.
