I posted a few pictures on Instagram and on my Instagram Stories last week asking you guys if you had any questions for a Q&A post I wanted to do! It’s been a while since I’ve answered readers questions on the ‘ol blog so I thought it was time to do it again. I always love doing these types of posts…especially so the new readers around here can get to know the girl behind the Healthy Helper community. Hope you enjoy! What are some little things that excite you?
Waking up in the morning in my own apartment. Sunshine and warm weather. My body’s ability to get me through the day. A fresh pot of chocolate truffle flavored coffee. New products at the grocery store. Coming home to my pup. Good food. And so much more..
What goes on in your mind when you’re on long runs?
The real question is…what DOESN’T go through my mind!? 😉 But in all seriousness, long runs are the perfect time to think about the day ahead and plan out what I’m going to do. I think about my to-do list, what I need to tackle when I get home, and even about the entire week ahead of me. I also listen to podcasts when I run so I focus on those during the long runs…they always give me ideas for new blog posts! And I definitely take in my surroundings! I notice the things happening around me and imagine background stories for the people/cars I see out and about. It’s fun! I wish I could be one of those runners who totally zones out during runs…but that’s just not me.

Favorite and least favorite things about blogging?
Favorite: interacting with my readers, when someone tries one of my recipes, receiving an email or message from the community saying I’ve helped/inspired them in some way, meeting fellow bloggers and making blogger friends
Least Favorite: the negativity that surfaces online when you put yourself out there for the world to get to know
Oh girl (or boy!), are you ready for a long answer!? I subscribe to over 35 podcasts that I keep up with regularly so it’s definitely hard to choose a favorite. Some that I am loving as of late include: That’s So Maven, Chasing Joy, Let it Out with Katie Dalebout, You Made it Weird (ALWAYS AND FOREVER!), The Nourished Podcast, This American Life, and SO MANY MORE.

Biggest food photography struggle?
Taking pictures of ugly food! Some stuff just IS NOT photogenic. Even if it tastes amazing…it’s hard to convince people to try it without a pretty picture! Also, having a steady hand…my hands are so shaky sometimes that it makes it hard to get a clear shot.
Least favorite kind of food to photograph ?
Wake up, drink a big glass of water and take my vitamins, take my dog out, feed my dog, put on my Garmin, drink my pre-workout drink, and head out for a run/workout! I eat breakfast as soon as I get back and start work for the day.
It varies but if I am at home for the night, I usually work right up until I make dinner around 7:30. I cook, watch TV, finish up work for the day, and then enjoy a relaxing homemade meal at my bistro table. Then I settle in to ‘relax’ for the night. I hop on the couch, snuggle with Ella, and catch up on my favorite shows. Around 9pm I take Ella out for her final walk of the night, do the dishes from dinner, and then make a night snack! I eat my snack in bed because IT’S FUN (and I can). Then I drift into carb coma and sleep for at least 8 hours every night.
Have you always been into running, or do you enjoy other workouts too?
I started running when I was 13 for my middle school cross-country team but I also played elite travel team softball my whole life (from age 4-18). My family is big into sports so I’ve played everything from soccer and volleyball to dance (when I was really little) and skiing! I loved being active and involved in sports throughout my teen years. It really instilled a love of fitness and movement in me that has stuck with me since. Throughout all the other sports I played in high school and college, I always ran consistently, slowly building up my distance, and realizing that I LOVED distance running. Throughout my whole life (well, from 13 at least!), running has always been there. It’s the one constant and it’s my greatest love in terms of fitness activities. I also strength train, do yoga, cycle, and cross train regularly.
What’s the favorite baked good you’ve ever made?
It’s hard to pick a favorite so here are a few good ones…
What does your weekly mileage look like?
It honestly changes EVERY week because I don’t follow a training plan. Like I said in my Phoenix Marathon recap, the only run I make sure I get in weekly is my long marathon training run. Aside from that, I just go by how I feel day by day. I never force anything.
Do you follow a training plan?
What is your list of priorities when it comes to workouts, blogging, school, free time, etc.? How do you decide which gets pushed to the wayside if you find yourself short on time ?
School and work always come first…but my workouts and marathon training are very important to me as well! But I also realize if I don’t excel with work and school I won’t be able to live the kind of lifestyle that allows me to workout and run as I like. So those are first on the list in terms of importance! I am lucky though that I’ve built a life for myself that is very flexible and let’s me do the things I love while still being productive, keeping up my social life, and supporting myself.
What are your thoughts on intermittent fasting?
This is a funny question actually because if you would have asked me about 4 months ago, I would have said…NO FREAKING WAY I could ever do that. Before a few months ago, I woke up in the morning and immediately ate breakfast. No questions. Had to eat before a workout. However, when I had a few scheduling conflicts in the mornings, I started having to adapt and fit in my workout before I had time to eat. At first I thought, I’d NEVER be able to do that. I felt like I’d have no energy or hit a wall half way through a workout. To my surprise, that never happened. In fact, I actually feel BETTER working out fasted than I did when I ate before runs/workouts. Now, I am not saying this is for everyone, but I am totally fine with just drinking before a workout and then coming to home to eat breakfast (usually around 11am). So I guess I sort of intermittent fast in a way without really meaning to? Does that make sense? I could never do one of those looooong fasts that people do where they don’t eat until late in the afternoon, but I have to say I like eating the bulk of my food (3000+ calories) in a shorter time period. Keeps me satisfied and happy!
As with everything though…DO YOU. Find what works for your body and mind and stick to it. Who knows if I’ll be eating like this forever…but for right now it’s working for my lifestyle and training! That’s all I can ask for in the moment.
If you had to ride a dinosaur into battle, what would it be?
First off, you win for BEST question ever. Now, I don’t know much about dinosaurs, but I’d have to go with a Pterodactyl! Who wouldn’t want to fly!?
What’s your absolute favorite way to spend time with friends?
This is actually really easy to answer and it’s something I do often with friends…meeting a friend for coffee or a snack at a local cafe and just catching up for a few hours without phones or computers or work or any distractions. I love just chatting and getting to know my friends even better than I already do! I also love going for walks together when the weather is nice.
I would like to know if you have any specific warm up for runs ? If you have any tips or advice for not getting nervous for big runs / workouts & tips on endurance ? And how you got to be an all round successful bad ass?
Well, thank you for the sweet compliment! I wouldn’t call myself a badass but it’s nice to be thought of that way. 🙂 Honestly, I don’t warm up…unless taking my dog out before my run counts as a warmup! 😉 I guess I sort of just treat my first few miles as a warm up to settle into a comfortable pace and get into the zone. I probably should do an actual warm up routine, but like I’ve said before, I am not your typical runner and definitely not someone to look to as an example. As far as nerves go, I definitely get them before big training runs, but it’s more of nervous-excitement than nervous-anxiety…if that makes sense. I use the nerves to fuel my run and to get hyped up for it! My biggest tip is to believe in yourself and your abilities. The mind is SO powerful. If you commit yourself to accomplishing a certain training goal, you CAN do it. Don’t tell yourself otherwise even when things get tough. And think about how amazing you’ll feel afterwards!
What do you refuel with (and how soon after) a long run? And also! What’s your favorite post long run treat?
I eat a big breakfast AS SOON as I get home from my morning workout. From there, I spend the rest of the day refueling with various snacks as well as lunch and dinner. I eat anywhere from 3000-4000 calories a day no matter what my workout is, so I have a good steady source of fuel every single day. My favorite post-long run treat? I guess food in general! HA! Nothing like eating a huge meal or snack after a tough training run. Doesn’t matter what it is, I get excited for it!
