A roundup of my favorite protein powders that I use as supplements, snacks, and baking ingredients! Find your new favorite with this helpful list.
Protein powder. I’ve been obsessed lately.
I blame this partly on Julianna for introducing me to Slap while I was in LA and partly on the Bob’s Red Mill post I did a few week’s back featuring their new protein powders. I’ve really broadened my protein powder horizons over the last few months.
I used to ONLY use unflavored varieties of whey and sometimes vegan kinds, but little did I know I was missing out on the world of flavored protein powders.
Granted, I still am not a fan of the ones that are overly sweet or that use artificial sweeteners/sucralose, but the stevia sweetened ones? I am all about those! It’s amazing what allowing myself to eat stevia has done for me in terms of opening up food options! That’s why I always say, no food is BAD food. There’s room for real stuff and ‘fun’ stuff alike.
But back to the protein powders. Since I’ve become quite a connoisseur and my stash has grown enormously, I thought it was time I finally rounded up my all time favorites as well as what I use them for.
Maybe you’ll discover a new kind to try or a new use for one of YOUR favorites. Without further ado (and in now specific order), here’s my top 5!
Quest Multi-Purpose | Use: Baking, Protein Ice Cream
-whey and casein protein mix
-unsweetened
About Time Peanut Butter (discontinued, but ANY of their flavors are amazing) | Use: Protein Ice Cream

Bob’s Red Mill Protein & Fiber Nutritional Booster Protein Powder (unflavored) | Use: On its own w/ milk, mixed into Power Bowls
-vegan, plant-based protein
-monkfruit sweetened
Slap Nutrition Whey Protein (all flavors) | Use: On its own w/ milk, Protein Ice Cream
-whey protein
-stevia sweetened
Les Mills Good Protein | Use: Baking, homemade frappuccinos

love this post! I can totally relate – I’m a protein powder junkie & will always try a new one. I’ve been wanting to try About Time powders forever! My favorite (since you mentioned you don’t like sweet or fake tasting powders) is Aloha – completely natural, plant-based protein that is just sweet enough. Great post!
Gotta try that! I haven’t yet and I am always looking for new ones to experiment with!
i want to try the bobs red mill one!! fave protein powder is vega and sunwarrior 🙂
Totally a fan of Quest for baking purposes. It’s so easy to mix and tastes good. No aftertaste. I’m loving Vega Sport and Vega One shakes for daily nutrition. I put the Vega sport mocha in my coffee in the morning after my workout. (and a dash of cayenne pepper!) Yum!
Vega definitely is a winner too! I have some of their vanilla right now and am enjoying it!
I see you got AMAZON working for you – he he he! 😉 And Um, crazily enough – I have never ever tried ANY of these protein powders!!! Everyone keeps posting about Bob’s protein – I need to JUMP ON that bandwagon!! My favorites are NuZest & SunWarrior! 🙂
I am a NuZest fan too! And nope not yet!! Haven’t set up the A-store yet! 🙂
Gotta try the BRM chai, especially now that it made the top 5 list! My current faves are Ka’Chava and Sprout Living <3 I mostly just love protein powders in my smoothies because they make the texture so extra creamy and thick! And the taste it good to 🙂
I haven’t tried either of those!! I’ll have to get some soon!
I am obsessed with it too. There are a few that I love, but I am always looking out for new ones to try. I use them ALL the time, mainly for satiety purposes. I think 90% of the recipes I have on my blog have protein powder involved haha. I’ve yet to try any of the ones you have listed yet though.
Oh really!? You HAVE to try these!!! They are so good.
This is a great post! I don’t use protein powders much but often get asked for recommendations from patients. I will definitely keep these in mind!
Thanks Rachel! I am glad you found this helpful!
I love protein powder! I’ve been digging the vega protein + greens powder lately. I’ve heard so many great things about About Time and their flavors sound delicious!
Slowly starting to get into Vega too!
Which one is the best for the price? 🙂
Depends on your needs! What do you want to use it for?
Probably mostly shakes and smoothies?
I would go for the about time! Good price and GREAT for that type of thing! Plus it’s available a lot of places online! There’s always deals. And lots of good flavors too.
All of these protein powder sound so good! I used to loveee using protein powder but we found my body isn’t too keen on having lots of protein powder loaded into it so I rarely use them now!
I love it so much! So thankful my body reacts well to it!
My favorite didn’t make the list. I want to try BRM. I’ve read so many great things about it.
Have a wonderful weekend Kaila!

I’m a huge fan of Terra’s Whey organic bourbon vanilla protein powder. It’s by far my absolute favorite! I’ve tried some of the vegan ones and the non-flavored ones but I just can’t. Blah. I’ve heard quite a few people talk about that About Time stuff – maybe I’ll have to try that sometime!
I use the Terra’s Whey in smoothies (duh), my oatmeal, overnight oats, and sometimes when I’m baking quick breads, cakes, brownies, etc just to give it a little bit of a nutritional boost. Sneaking in the good stuff so my fam doesn’t notice. 😉
Gotta try that the Tera’s whey brand soon!
Thanks for all the links. My daughter is vegetarian and I am gluten free, we should be able to find a great protein supplement/addition to our diet with this list. And all those great flavors! I’m in!
You’ll love these options!!
I love that you included ways to use the protein powder! I really need to learn more about it. Thanks for sharing your top 5 with us at Merry Monday this week!
Thank you!! I am glad you found this helpful!!
Ooh, I have tried a few About Time flavors and loved them. I bought a vanilla Vega protein + greens last week & it’s AWFUL. But I can’t return it. So now I’m trying to find ways to hide the taste. It doesn’t taste like vanilla in the slightest. Just chalky & gross. And turns everything a gross brown color.
I really like Designer Whey vanilla & chocolate. I mostly use it in protein shakes & in overnight oats!
Uh oh! I have some of that vega at home…I wonder if I’ll like it!! Haven’t opened it yet!!
Kaila – love this post about some new protein powders on the market. My feature for this week’s Sunday Fitness & Food!
Thank you so much!!

I am so glad Ilka featured this post or I would have missed it. I have been hearing a lot about Quest protein powers but have not tried it yet.
I think this is going to make me give it a try.
I have been using BeFit’s protein powder, I won some and have since then ordered my own.
I’ve used protein powders in my oatmeal and coffee other than shakes but that is about the extent of it. I really should bake more period but especially with it.
Thanks for sharing these!
So welcome!!! Let me know if you end up trying any of these!!
