You all know I love cooking and making homemade versions of my favorite products. Well, my love for DIY living extends far beyond the kitchen. I also have a penchant for making homemade beauty and personal care products.
Foot scrubs, lip balms, baking soda shampoos….you name it, I’ve tried it all. And often times I drag my mom into being my guinea pig tester! Ha! But she’s never had to worry too much, most times the creations end up turning out pretty well and we save tons of money by making our own versions of otherwise expensive products. Sure, natural ingredients cost more up front but you save money in the long run because they are versatile and can be used in multiple recipes. Plus a little goes a long way. Once you buy the staple products you need for DIY beauty projects, you’ll be stocked for a while!
Another plus to making your own beauty products is that you eliminate all the unnecessary additives, parebens, and sulfates that are put into most products out on the market. Natural beauty products are so much better for your skin, hair, and nails. Usually I react harshly to chemical filled, store-bought products, but I’ve found that making my own solutions with minimal ingredients really keeps that under control.
Today I wanted to share my Top Five Favorite DIY Beauty and Personal Care Products I’ve made over the years. These are my go-tos and I have had a lot of success with them. One of these days I want to start experimenting with my own formulas, but I’m not quite there yet. I will stick with recipe testing for now and leave the beauty experiments to the professionals. 😉
Gather these ingredients:
- 1 c sea salt
- 1/3 c coconut oil
- 1-2 tsp peppermint extract or 5-10 drops oil
- 5-10 drops rosemary
- 1/4 c olive oil
- dried and chopped mint and rosemary
With your salt in a bowl, add all of the other ingredients, setting aside half of your jojoba oil. Mix until everything is incorporated. Mix with your hands, and the bonus is your hands will feel awesome when you’re done. You want all the salt to be covered with oil but not sloppy or wet. Add more oil as needed.
Use for: removing calluses, softening feet, and exfoliating dead skin
[This is my go-to for homemade gifts!]
- ¼ cup + 2 TB coconut oil, soft, but not liquid
- ¼ cup good-quality baking soda
- ½ tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp bentonite clay
- ¼-1/2 tsp liquid pure stevia
- 5-7 drops peppermint essential oil, the amount will depend on taste preference
Use for: dental care and oral health
Combine these 3 ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cup of Suger (in my opinion brown coarse sugar)
- 2tsp Green tea powder
- 2 Green tea bags
- 1 cup Coconut oil
Use for: exfoliation on any skin area (especially face and feet)
- 1 teaspoon of Raw Honey
1. Apply to skin and leave on for 10 to 15 min. Some prefer to leave it on longer, up to an hour.
2. To remove the honey face mask, apply a little coconut oil on top and massage it in. This will help the honey to come off easier and aid in moisturizing. Then rinse off with cool water.
Your skin should immediately feel soft and moisturized.
Use for: facial skin moisturizer and cleanser
5. Baking Soda Mouthwash
Combine these 3 ingredients:
- 1 tbsp of baking soda
- 3 drops of peppermint essential oil
- a glass of water
Use for: freshening breath and killing bacteria
Don’t worry, if you’re not up for making your own natural beauty products just yet, you can still get the high quality, chemical free products you’re looking for by buying from places like NOW Foods!
As apart of the last installment of my #NOWWellness Blogger series, I wanted to share some of the beauty and personal care products I received to try out. A lot of these were on par or better than the homemade versions I’ve made and I had no adverse reactions to any of them because of their gentle, natural formulations.
Biotin-Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for normal growth and body function. It supports amino acid metabolism and promotes normal immunity. It also plays a key role in skin health! I’ve started taking this and have already noticed a difference.
Xyli-White Neem & Tea Tree Toothpaste–This is a fluoride free toothpaste that uses Xylitol as its main ingredient. Xylitol is great for maintaining tooth health. It also freshens breath and whitens without all the typical ingredients found in toothpaste! Love the tea tree oil flavor too….smells so good!
100% Sweet Almond Oil-This oil is ideal for skin in need of hydration and nourishment. It can also be used a moisturizer during massage! Almond Oil is easily absorbed and won’t clog pores, promoting clear, soft, healthy skin. This would be perfect for using in any of the above recipes that call for oil!
Herbal Revival Shampoo and Conditioner-This shampoo and conditioner set contains Horsetail Extract, Tea Tree Oil and Sea Kelp. It helps soothe and nourish the scalp while L-Arginine and L-Cystine strengthen damaged follicles. It’s perfect for use on damaged hair with split ends caused by blow-drying, coloring and every day styling.
Probiotic 10 + Inulin-Probiotic-10 packets have at least 10 billion live organisms consisting of Probiotic bacterial strains that are known to colonize the human GI tract. They also contain Inulin to promote the growth of a balanced spectrum of organisms throughout the intestinal tract. The powder mixes easily with any liquid of your choice and is virtually taste free!
So far I am LOVING all of these products and they are really making me feel better than I have in a while. It’s amazing what getting on the right beauty care and supplement regimen can do for your insides and outsides.
