Chicken wings. Potato chips. Sweet potato fries. Onion rings. Roasted vegetables.
You name it, my family and I have tried making it in the Air Fryer. At first when I bought our Air Fryer, I wasn’t sure how often I’d use it. In fact, I sort of regretted buying it because I figured I didn’t need one more ‘gadget’ hanging around my apartment. But once I broke it out for the first time and realized how fast, efficient, and easy it is to use, I knew I had made the right decision.
Air Fryers are ALL the rage right now. Definitely one of the “food fads” of the year. But regardless of whether or not they remain popular or not on the foodie scene, I know I’ll be using mine for a long time to come. Partly because I LOVE the way it cooks a lot of staple foods that I usually use the oven for; and partly because I’ve discovered some pretty cool uses for it that you won’t find in any Air Fryer manual or recipe book.
Yup, that’s right. After seeing a few people attempt to make bagels in their Air Fryers on social media, I thought it was time to try my hand at the experiment! Everyone I saw was going the sweet route, so obviously I had to be different and go SAVORY. Makes sense since my favorite kind of bagel is Everything anyways.
The Air Fryer bagel recipes I saw on social media all required some sort of dairy ingredients or eggs to make them. But I wondered if I could make a vegan recipe that would work just as well!
Equipped with a few key ingredients, I got to mixing and shaping.
The end result was BETTER than I expected. Delicious mini bagels without any boiling or baking or yeast! Soft and fluffy on the inside, crispy and perfectly seasoned on the outside.
The SoDelicious Unsweetened Plain Yogurt is what made these bagels turn out as perfectly as they did. It kept them moist, soft, and fluffy without any added dairy, eggs, or oil.
I always have SoDelicious yogurt on hand, so it isn’t really a surprise that it ended up in this recipe. SoDelicious yogurt actually helped me switch from regular yogurt to dairy-free. I never thought I’d be able to give up regular yogurt (even though it didn’t make me feel very good) because I had such a hard time finding a vegan/dairy-free variety that I liked. SoDelicious is THAT variety. It’s so smooth and creamy, plus it actually has that slight ‘tang’ that I love about plain yogurt. It blended in PERFECTLY in this bagel recipe and I can’t imagine using any other yogurt to make these.
- For bagels:
- 1 single serve container of SoDelicious plain yogurt
- ¼ cup pumpkin puree
- 1 cup gluten-free oat flour, about 100 grams (I used Bob’s Red Mills)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- For coating:
- Unsweetened almond milk
- Dried onion flakes
- Dried garlic flakes
- Trader Joes Everything But the Bagel seasoning
- Mix together all ingredients.
- May need to use your hands to get it completely combined.
- Divide dough into 5 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a long log shape and close ends to make a circle (bagel shape).
- Lightly brush the bagel tops with almond milk.
- Sprinkle top with onion flakes, garlic flakes, and Everything Bagel seasoning.
- Coat Air Fryer pan with nonstick spray.
- Cook at 350 for 10-12 minutes (2 or 3 at a time depending on the size of your Air Fryer).
- Let cool and slice! Spread with vegan cream cheese!
After making vegan AND gluten-free bagels in the Air Fryer, I feel like the possibilities are ENDLESS. What’s next vegan donuts? Soft pretzels? I can’t wait to keep experimenting. 😁
