My go-to tips for keeping your feet healthy and happy every day!
This post is sponsored by ABEO®, all opinions are my own.
Since I haven’t been able to run all year, I’ve been doing a lot of walking. Coupled with the fact that I no longer own a car, I spend A LOT of time on my feet. For exercise, for commuting, and just for leisure. I LOVE walking, but now that I do it so often and at such a high volume, I’ve discovered that you take extra care of your feet to keep the healthy (and happy!) long term.
It’s not enough to just wash them when you shower or put your feet up at the end of a long day. Your feet need extra TLC for all that they do for you on a daily basis!
I’ll admit I haven’t always been the kindest to my feet (hello flip-flops in 20 degree weather and ill-fitting shoes), but now I’ve changed my ways and take the time to make sure I am treating them right.
Today I am sharing the 6 ways I care for my feet everyday. Take note and maybe start implementing some of my tips into your own life.
Keep Them Covered
It’s so important to protect your feet form the elements at all times. Whether it’s below freezing out or scorching hot, exposing your feet to extreme elements can cause major issues. Frostbite or sunburn in your feet and toes can lead to permanent nerve damage, so it’s important to adjust your footwear for the weather. Additionally, wearing socks (even when indoors) is key to help avoid blisters and sores. They also absorb and wick away moisture, which can prevent fungus from growing such as Athlete’s Foot.
Keep Them Clean
Keeping your feet clean goes right along with keeping them covered. Wash your feet in warm (not too HOT) water and don’t soak them for long periods of time as it dries the skin out. Be sure to dry your feet well, especially in between the toes, so that moisture is not left their creating a perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to grow.
Moisturize & Exfoliate
Just like other areas of your body, if your foot skin is dry, apply moisturizer all over to keep them soft and smooth. In addition, use exfoliating foot creams or washes and remove hard skin and calluses with a foot file. Be sure to not don’t overdo it though or your skin will crack, tear, and potentially grow back even harder.
Staying active on your feet is sort of a Catch 22 in terms of foot health, but still super important! Exercising and being on your feet for long periods of time can cause wear and tear to your feet, but it’s also important for circulating blood to the area. Switch up your workout routine to include high and low impact activities so that you can stay moving while giving your feet a break on occasion. Some low impact exercise options for your feet include cycling and swimming.
Wear Supportive Shoes
Did you know that having a proper walking shoe is just as important as having a specific shoe for running? Walking can be just as hard on your feet as going for a run, so you need to make sure you have a shoe properly fitted for your foot shape and stride.
I learned this the hard way by just thinking I could wear any old pair of sneakers to walk in. But that’s not true! Getting fitted for a proper biomechanical footwear is crucial to enjoying your walks AND having good foot health.
I recently had the pleasure of getting to experience the ABEO® footwear line at my local Walking Company store. The manager there, Joshua, was extremely helpful and attentive in helping me find the perfect ABEO® shoes for me and my needs.
We started with a custom foot analysis on their system that created a customized footbed digitally matched to my unique arch and walking style. Once the analysis was done and we were able to see what needs I had in terms of support and fit, Joshua brought out a bunch of stylish ABEO® footwear options for me to try. They have everything from boots and sandals to slippers and athletic shoes….all with the 3D³ orthotics built in and certified by the American Podiatric Medical Association.
I ended up leaving with a pair of custom sandals and lace-free walking shoes.
I’ve never had a more comfortable pair of shoes in my life. Walking is a dream in both pairs and I am so excited to be able to wear flip-flops again since I’ve avoided them because of their lack of support.
If you’re looking for proper walking shoes that will keep your feet healthy and happy, ABEO® is the way to go.
