Bar lovers! Get ready for some goodness. In addition this week’s Foods of the Moment features, I have an awesome giveaway from ZonePerfect. They have 4 different flavors of their Perfectly Simple Bars and you have the chance to try them out for yourself! But before we get to that, let’s get into my latest and greatest Foods of the Moment from around the health world.
How fun is it to get packages from abroad? I love it! These bars came all the way from the UK care of the Royal Mail of course! 😉
Aduna sent me some of their Moringa and Baobab energy bars. These are two ingredients that were totally new to me so I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of taste. Baobab is a 100% natural, nutrient-dense, raw wholefood. It is a rich source of vitamin C, calcium, potassium and thiamin. It is also almost 50% fiber and has one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any fruit in the world. Moringa boasts just as amazing of a nutritional profile! It’s one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet and is a 100% organic green superfood made from the naturally-dried
leaf of the moringa tree. Moringa is 25% protein and is a natural multivitamin.
But how do they taste? Well the bars reminded me of standard fruit and nut bars, soft, dense, with slight crunch from whole pieces of nuts. They were a bit small for my liking but the flavors made up for that. The Moringa reminded me of green tea, so it was a bit bitter but was complimented perfectly by the sweetness of the fruit. I really liked it! The Baobab bar was delicious as well…very citus-y tasting and very sweet! Both were very unique and I’d love to see these two superfood ingredients used in more products in the future.
Explore Asian sent me their 3 gluten-free pastas to try! As an italian I LOVE pasta. All kinds. But I had never had a variety made from legumes before. I was excited to see if they’d have that authentic pasta texture and taste.
Aside from being gluten-free, these pastas boast a heck of a nutritional profile! The black bean variety has 25 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber per serving, while the edamame variety has 24 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber! The ingredients list are super simple for each of them as well…literally, the main ingredient (either beans or rice) and water.
The textures of all the pastas were very similar to regular whole wheat pasta I am used to. One thing I noticed is that it was impossible to overcook them. They retained a perfect al dente texture no matter how long I left them on the stove. Also they didn’t stick together once they were drained. The edamame and black bean varieties had a slight bean-y flavor to them but as soon as I put some sauce on them (my new Vegan Cheese Sauce to be exact!) they tasted totally neutral. I LOVED the red rice noodles as well! They were a bit denser and more hearty than regular rice noodles and had a great nutty flavor. I’d love to try red rice on it’s own someday.
I think these pastas are a great option for people with Celiac who miss regular pasta or for people wanting expand their pasta eating repertoire.
Simple Girl sent me 4 of their dressing/sauces to try! I have to admit, I’m not a big dressing person. As you know I saute all my salad toppings so with the oil in the pan and the sauces I use, it’s sort of like they make their own dressing. Aside from that I like topping salads with salsa, hummus, guacamole, or sometimes mustard! It all depends on what ingredients I’m using and what I’m in the mood for that day.
With that said, it’s nice to change things up every now and then and Simple Girl helped introduce some new flavors into my daily lunch salads.
For those of you that care about calories, the Simple Girl Dressings and Sauces are calorie free. They are also sweetened with stevia so they’re sugar-free as well!
Of course I’m not watching my sugar intake and I don’t watch my calories either (I eat over 3000 a day), but I believe all food has a place in a healthy diet….especially if it tastes good! And I make sure to make up the lack of calories in the dressings in other places.
Even though these dressings are calorie free, they’re not made with all those chemical-y, hard to pronounce ingredients like Walden Farms products. They’re made from all natural spices, herbs, vinegars, and stevia.
I was sent Sweet Mustard, Carolina Style BBQ Sauce, Sweet Vinaigrette, and Citrus Ginger.
The Sweet Mustard was definitely sweet with a little bit of a zesty kick from the mustard flavor! The Carolina BBQ was thick and rich tasting with nice, smoky and sweet tomato flavor. I could taste a little hickory in it! The Sweet Vinaigrette reminded me of a balsamic-like dressing and I liked the slight garlic flavor. And lastly, the Citrus Ginger was fruity and tangy with a slight spiciness from the ginger! It reminded me of sauce you might find at an Asian restaurant! Very flavorful.
If you didn’t notice, I described all the dressings as sweet. In fact, they were a little too sweet for my taste. I think that’s because I don’t really eat stevia so my taste buds aren’t used to its sweetness. But I know a lot of you regularly use stevia so these would probably be perfect for you!
And now for that giveaway…
ZonePerfect has a new line of bars called Perfectly Simple. These bars are different from any other products they’ve put out on the market in that they are made from natural, whole food ingredients with minimal processing. All the bars are high in protein, gluten-free, and have less than 200 calories per bar. They come in 4 new yummy flavors ranging from fruity ones to chocolate delights! I recently had the chance to try them for myself and fell in love. I love the huge chunks of nuts, seeds, chocolate, and fruit in each one.
Although these aren’t my typical go-to bars, I think they make for a perfect treat! They honestly taste like a candy bar with killer nutrition stats in comparison. I found they make for a great on the go snack or even a healthy dessert if you’re looking for something sweet after a meal.
It’s nice to see companies taking a more active approach to increasing the nutritional value of their products and making them more healthful as opposed to processed. More companies should take Zone’s lead and ‘simplify’ their bars. No need for crazy ingredients to get good taste and high quality fuel!
Zone has this #FeelGooder campaign going on right now and I think these bars align perfectly with the message of taking a little time out of your day to make yourself feel GOOD. Meals and snacks are some of the only times I sit down and relax during the day and food is meant to be enjoyable. I definitely #FeelGooder when I know I am eating something healthy that also tastes amazing! These Perfectly Simple bars do just that. Sometimes simple is better. Especially when it comes to snack choices.
