I had planned on just writing a simple recap post today….some pictures, a few fun videos, and a little commentary. But after the events of the day…I can’t help but elaborate.
Canisius College is a Jesuit institution. Not being a very religious person, I was nervous about how I would fit in. If people would be accepting of my views, my personality, of me in general! I am not a typical teenager and because of that experienced a lot of intolerance in high school (something I’ve mentioned before).
My biggest fear was that this trend would continue in college.
But boy….could that be the farthest from the truth!
And I think part of that is because of the Jesuit ideals. They promote acceptance, tolerance, inclusion, and living to serve others. All values that I lead my life by as well.
So I’ve learned it doesn’t really matter whether you’re religious or not, what your background is, what your political ideals are, whether you are conservative or a wild child…here at Canisius everyone is part of the community and everyone is welcome.
I know that sounds to good to be true…but as of now from what I’ve seen, I couldn’t be happier with how I am feeling on this campus. The nerves have dissipated a bit and I just feel really happy.
Almost overwhelmingly so. Like after today’s orientation events…I actually felt myself getting a bit teary eyed because my heart just felt so full.
Let me explain.
On my last post I mentioned Dave Coleman, the dating doctor, and how funny his show was! Well, he has proven to be so much more than an entertainer and a comedian. He is truly inspirational and an incredible individual. He’s making a difference in the world and he lent a little bit of his insight to my class today.
We had a community builder event, called Hooray, this afternoon. I didn’t really know what to expect or what exactly we’d be doing…but it turned out to be amazing. Not only did I meet hundreds of people I hadn’t met before, but the activities we did in our groups (or families as they came to be known) made me feel so much better about who I am as a person.
One activity that really stuck out in my mind was one that I’m sure a lot of you have heard of. It’s to point out commonalities between people by yelling out different characteristics and then stepping forward if that specific thing applies to you.
It was so uplifting to see other people around me with the same mind-set, values, and morals. It made me feel like I could relate to so many people all at once. And like I mentioned above, I was really overwhelmed by all the positivity.
For once in my life, I feel like I’m not alone. I feel like I am finally home.
And now for some fun…
Pics and vids from the hypnotist we saw last night! (Not only does Canisius promote bonding very sucessfully….but they know how to bring the FUN as well!)
My roommate got hypnotized! It was absolutely insane and amazing to see live!
Other festivities of the day included a scavenger hunt all around campus (my team came in 4th! WOO!), a student activities fair, and some hanging with my roommates!
And can you believe this…I am actually EXCITED to start class on Monday! I guess that’s what the right environment will do to ya!
To all my fellow college freshman out there…I hope your first few days are just as amazing and memorable as mine have been! I now understand why people say college is the best time of your life.
Today’s Healthy Help: I helped lead my team to (figurative) victory during the scavenger hunt by using my running endurance! HA! Basically I was just nominated to run ahead and grab all the clues since I was the only runner on the team. 🙂
