Hey-oh! How did everyone (well students and government workers!) enjoy their day off? I don’t mind a day off of course…but I have to admit that the premise of Columbus Day seems pretty wrong to me. He just doesn’t seem very holiday worthy based on his rather controversial history, ya know? But details aside, it was still a nice day of rest.
I have to ask…how has the weather been near you lately?! Talk about sudden changes….here in Buffalo it went from 70 degrees and sunny to down right disgusting in less than a week! I was still feeling pretty summery this time last week…but now the forecast is ALL rain, wind, doom, and gloom!
[Speaking of rain…I was craving a run this morning, so I braved the POURING rain and got it done! It stopped when I had about ten minutes of running left! Felt pretty accomplished to brave the elements…there was literally NO ONE outside! 🙂 ]
We even have a frost advisory tonight. Blech!
On to the topic of today’s post…
Ever since Expo East, I feel like I have been posting a lot more product reviews than I usually do. Partly because of all the connections I made and partly because I was made aware of so many new companies to review for. While I am ecstatic to get the opportunity to try all these wonderful products, I know for my readers product reviews can be a bit monotonous and boring if done to often. Right now I just feel a bit overwhelmed with how many companies I owe reviews to! So I’ve decided after a I finish reviewing the products I currently have in my sample stock pile, I am gonna take a break from contacting companies for a while. To give myself a break AND all of you! I swear my house has become the post office! I have been getting packages EVERYDAY…sometimes two!! There’s a lot of things I’ve been wanting to post about, but just haven’t had the time to because of review obligations.
So bear with me for the next week or two while I finish out these reviews (a few giveaways will be thrown in as well!!). Hopefully you’ll be able to get something positive out of them and be introduced to some cool new brands and products!
Here’s a few right now…
Skout Natural bars are all natural energy bars made with oats, nuts, and fruit! They are completely unsweetened and contain all recognizable “from the earth” ingredients. I was so excited to see what flavors these bars came in and that even the ones with CHOCOLATE in them are no sugar added! One of my favorite qualities in a bar!
Each flavor tastes EXACTLY like its name. I especially loved the Cherry Vanilla and the Chocolate Peanut butter. The tartness of the cherries mixed with the sweet notes of vanilla were amazing. And the choco-pb tasted like a rich reeses cup…so much more flavorful from the unsweetened chocolate! I love the texture of these bars as well…soft but dense at the same time and chewy due to the oats and dried fruit.
I will definitely be ordering some more of these bars! New addition to my favorites list for sure!
Farmer’s Market sent me some coupons to sample some of their organic pureed veggies. I could only find their pumpkin product near me but that’s okay because you all know how much I love pumpkin!
When I opened the can I was immediately hit with a sweet pumpkiny aroma…so I knew this stuff was going to be flavorful! The consistency was a little thinner than your typical store brand pumpkin and the color was a bit more yellow.
The puree was incredibly sweet and flavorful! It reminded me of Libby’s a bit but with a smoother texture. I do have to say though that it didn’t taste very pumpkiny…more like pureed winter squash…the kind you can get frozen at the store. I love that stuff so that taste was fine with me! It was a great addition to my morning oats!
Thanks Farmer’s Market!
Metro Mint Water
Flavored water’s are all the rage lately. But what makes Metro Mint even more innovative than your typical flavored waters is that theirs are completely unsweetened and flavored only with mint and natural fruit/food essences! I wasn’t sure how I would feel about mint in my water, as I usually drink it plain, but I was surprised at how refreshing it is.
Because the waters are flavored with out a sweeteners of any kind they have the same nutritional values as your standard bottle of water. I wondered whether the taste would be detectable with a sweetener of some sort and was happy to find that on my first sip, the taste was not only noticeable, but STRONG! So much so that if you’re not a mint fan then these waters may be a bit to strong for you. Also, I noted that the flavor got stronger as the drank more of the water, so you may want to shake your bottle a bit as you continue to drink it.
The uniqueness of the flavors were a fun addition as well! I never thought I would enjoy dark chocolate water…but it was actually one of my favorites!
Thanks Metro Mint!
Mother Earth Dehydrated and Freeze Dried Produce
Mother Earth specializes in dehydrated and freeze-dried veggies and fruits. They are perfect for things like camping or travel…but I liked them just for everyday use! The dehydrated veggies are easily rehydrated through 10 or so minutes of simmering and the freeze-dried veggies and fruits are the perfect crunchy addition to salad or on their own as a snack!
While the dehydrated veggies didn’t have quite as much flavor as their fresh counter parts, they made great, convenient additions to egg scrambles and soups that I made. They plumped up perfectly and I was happy to see that their natural texture was pretty much completely restored in the rehydrating process. They also make for a great alternative to buying expensive veggies that you may not use up in time before they go bad. For example, the dried leeks allow you to use a little bit at a time to add flavor and not have to buy a WHOLE bunch at once! Some of my other favorites out of the bunch were: onion, diced tomato, sweet potato, brocoli, potato, and carrots!
The freeze-dried foods were incredibly flavorful! The fruits were a great addition to yogurt and cereal bowls, while the veggies were awesome on top of soups and salads! I especially enjoyed the freeze-dried sweet peas and the freeze-dried apricots!
Such a fun, new way to use and eat produce!
All and all…an amazing batch of samples and an even greater group of companies to work with!
Have you tried/heard of any of these products before?
Which one caught your eye the most?
