Blogging can be such a great way to connect with other people and let others into your own personal journey through life. But what if some people in your everyday life don’t support your passion (or whatever you blog about)? This can be sticky situation and I wanted to open up a bit of a discussion about it.
I know for me personally, there are some people that are in my daily life that no nothing about my blog. They are people my age (mostly my close friends sadly :(), that just don’t get the fun in leading a healthy lifestyle and loving all things HEALTH related in general. I have always eaten a little differently than the normal kid (my mom would pack me really fresh, wholesome lunches ever since grade school), and kids who are used to the status quo always feel the need to point out and ridicule others who are a bit different than themselves. Instead of embracing a lifestyle different from their own, people tend to pick out what’s different about another person. And truthfully, I probably have a lot more to say about how ‘weird’ their diets are than mine :)…come on sweeteners made by a chemist in a lab, dye made from artificial products, man made fats that take years off your life ?!?!

That’s a lot more ‘strange’ than a healthy, balanced diet, don’t ya think? Regardless, I have had to deal, for most of my life, with people who can’t accept someone who likes to lead a healthy lifestyle.
SO, how do you deal with this type of stuff? It makes me kind of upset sometimes that I can’t share such a big part of my life with people that mean so much to me. The reason I choose not to is because it would bring further negativity in to my life that I truly don’t want or like. But not being able to share it with some people, really makes me question whether they are true friends and worth while to be involved with. To me a true friend is someone who loves and accepts you for you! Thankfully I do have amazing people like that in my life who support me and my passions 100%! To contradict the negativity that some people bring to life, I choose to focus on the positive people ( especially my parents and sister who have supported and congratulated me through every success and stride in my life, whether big or small!). I have a fun quote that kind of encompasses my views on people who don’t support/ have your best interest in mind (it’s a little crude but so well said….;)):
“Don’t focus on the one guy who hates you. You don’t go to the park and set your picnic down next to the only pile of dog $h!^.”
Okay so maybe that wasn’t the most eloquent way of saying it but, basically don’t let the small bit of negativity in your life distract you from the truly wonderful things! I am able to get over those few people because of all of YOU! I love being part of the healthy living/blog community and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
So now I am wondering:
-
If you have a blog, have you refrained from telling some people in your lives about your blog?
-
How do you deal with people who ridicule some of your life choices? How do you contend with negativity?
Well! Enough of this serious stuff! Let’s get on with some fun foodie adventures:
Today my mom and I made our once (sometimes twice) a year trip to Whole Foods! Buffalo has absolutely no Whole Foods anywhere around it, but we both love it so much that we drive up to Oakville in Canada sometimes to visit theres. It’s about an hour and a half away, so the gas is kind of expensive! That’s why we don’t go to often. But when we do make our way up there, I am sure to stock up on tons of goodies that I can’t get locally! Here’s what I picked up on today’s trip:

*If you wanna look back on last year’s trip here’s the link*
Of course we had to get lunch at the famous food bar to top off the trip. (sorry the pic is with the blackberry so there not to great :/)
I had a mix of tons of grain and bean salads on top of some fresh veggies and toppings! My favorites were an edamame lentil salad and a quinoa almond salad that had currant and a great sweet dressing on top! Rosemary sweet potatoes were also enjoyed!
Aside from being really expensive, lunch was AMAZING!
I can’t wait to live somewhere that has a Whole Foods (and a trader joes :))!
Have a great night and rest of the week everyone!

I haven’t told quite a few people about my blog. I just don’t feel comfortable with it, and I don’t really want to go through the response I would get. I do wish I could be a bit more open about it, though.
Hello! I’m sorry to hear that not everyone in your life supports you and what you do~ unfortunately there are people out there that will think negatively or just think ‘different’. A friend of mine once told me, “What other people say about you and what they think of you is none of your business” That quote has helped me get through some difficulties. Just brush it off and keep going forward and do what is best for you and makes you happy! You’re helping so many people out there that enjoy reading your blog so those few people that don’t support you~ brush it off. Love you much!
I’m totally in the same boat. And I’ve been debating for a while whether to start a blog or not (I actually made the account on WordPress/layout/pages/etc a while ago but haven’t posted anything…maybe soon!). But if I were to start a blog, I probably wouldn’t tell my close friends either. I can’t tell you how many times my friends or family have made faces at what I was making/eating for lunch or criticized how I spend so long packing a wholesome, healthy lunch. Just today one of my friends questioned why I was eating a turkey/spinach/goat cheese sandwich (soo good, by the way) while they were eating brownies and other junk food. I always remind myself that I’m not eating healthy for them, but because I genuinely like healthy food and like the way I feel when I eat healthy.
You’re very lucky that your family will support you in healthy eating. If it weren’t for me, we wouldn’t have whole grain bread, greek yogurt, or spinach in our house. And a lot of that I usually have to buy myself (well…not the bread or spinach, but greek yogurt, non-Chewy brand granola bars, etc).
Oh my gosh, I love Whole Foods. There’s one 15 minutes away from my house, but I don’t go that often because I have to buy everything I want from there. There’s actually a few job openings there so I’m considering applying for a job there (employees get a 20% discount!). That would be amazing. It was actually my job last summer – working in concessions at a zoo – that convinced me to turn to healthy eating. Working around fried food all summer will do that to you. Oy.
Whew, this is wayy longer than I thought it would be! Such a great discussion post!

P.S. In the first grocery photo, I laughed at the girl’s face (I’m not sure if that’s a photo or TV…) that looks like she’s looking at all of the groceries. hehe. 🙂
Good for you! To be so confident and aware at such a young age is very impressive and admirable!
It took me quite a few more years to get a full grasp on why it is good to be different. 🙂
I have a few friends and co-workers that know about my blog, but for the most part, I don’t talk to them about it because our opinions about food are very different! And, I think that is okay – it’s pretty common to talk to different people about different aspects of your life where you have common ground.
Keep up the good work!
