Hey friends! I work on Wednesday’s and don’t get home until late usually so Haley has generously offered to hang out with you all tonight!!
Hey Healthy Helper readers! I’m Haley, the writer of the blog: Health Freak College Girl. On the blog, I write about health and fitness and how it is achievable in college and beyond. First off, I wanted to thank Kaila for letting me take over her blog for a day. Second, I wanted to talk to you guys about things that are a daily occurrence in my life while in college. But making a list would be boring, so I’m doing it with the alphabet!
Almond Milk – This stuff is a lifesaver when you want milk. It’s especially good because it doesn’t need to be refrigerated until it’s opened up. Use it in oatmeal, smoothies, or cereal.
Bananas – I mean really…who doesn’t love nut butter and bananas?
Chia Seeds – These are a great way to get your daily dose of omega-3s. Your roommates may think they are sprinkles (true story) but they will never know how delicious they are until they try them!
Don’t Be Afraid to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone – This has to do socially, educationally, or having to do with food or exercise. Don’t be afraid to try a new workout that you have never done before. They are having a zumba class on campus? Give it a try! Want to go on a run but don’t know the area? Google the streets and plan out your route! (Bring your phone too, just in case.) As for socially, don’t wait for people to come to you. Go out there! Have fun! You aren’t going to make friends or relationships by just sitting in your dorm. When you get out there once, you will do it over and over again J
Exercise – Running, spinning, swimming, weight lifting, whatever! Take full advantage of your school’s recreation center. They may offer fitness classes, which are great. If not, running is my personal favorite way to escape the stresses of school.
Flax Seeds (Ground) – These are similar to chia seeds because they are full of omega-3s. I love putting some on top of oatmeal, cereal, or yogurt.
Garmin Forerunner – I don’t know how I have lived without this! It’s an awesome GPS watch that tracks how much you run and your pace. It’s amazing. But make sure to keep your eyes ahead, and not looking down at the watch so you don’t run into a tree. (Just kidding I haven’t done that…yet!) I named my watch George. His full name is George Forerunner.
Hummus – This is great to put on top of salads or dip veggies in.
Iced Tea – I <3 iced tea! It’s so refreshing and a great any time of the day. Also, most dining halls have it at the soda machine, so there is that option if you don’t want some water.
Jersey Shore – a.k.a. BEST SHOW EVER! Okay that is totally my own opinion. (And yes…I know Jersey Shore has nothing to do with healthy living.) None of my other roommates like it that much but there is a group that I’ve met that loves it! We get together on Thursdays and have a fist pumping party. (P.S. Check out this totally unnecessary/necessary Jersey Shore dog leash!)
Kashi Cereal (or basically any other cereal) – Cereal will become your best friend in college. It is the most amazing go to snack. Easy to clean and it can be cheap, if you use coupons. (P.S. You really should use coupons…they make you feel like you are getting the food for freeee!)
Learn! – Yes, yes, parties and late nights are a great part of college. But remember what you came to college for…to get an education! Not gonna lie, I forget about this sometime. My friends may be going to the movies and I have homework so I end up dropping the homework like a hot potato! Then I end up regretting it at one in the morning… So I too am working on this part, but education always comes first.
Magic Bullet – MY FAVORITE THING!! It’s straight up awesome. I mainly use it for smoothies. They sell smoothies here on campus but it costs about $4 for a small. A small! Therefore, I make my own.
Nike Free Runs – These are my fav running shoes! I know everybody has their own opinions about the best, but I am just speaking from my personal experience. I have 3 pairs and I still want more…
Oatmeal – 99% of college dorms have a microwave, making oatmeal the perfect food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack. Plus, there are so many combinations you can do with oatmeal. Some of these creations include putting pb on top, melting banana into the oats, or making some pumpkin oatmeal. Or you can do my personal fav: oats, stevia, dark chocolate, pb.
Peanut Butter/Nut Butters – I have been in school for about two months now and I have already gone through 4 jars of peanut butter and 1 jar of almond butter…enough said.
Quiet Time – Basically this means taking advantage your school library. I never used to go to the library while at home, but now that I have less space to myself, it is a perfect place to hang out for a few hours and get some work done.
Raisins (or other dried fruit) – What’s easier than grabbing a handful of dried fruit when heading off to class? Whether used as an on-the-go snack or on top of yogurt, oatmeal, or cereal, it’s still a great thing to have. My personal favorite dried fruit is prunes. (Np, I’m not an old person…yes, I do love fiber.)
Salad Creations – I have become very creative with my salads since being in college. People may look at you like, ‘Why is that girl eating chili/tomato sauce on a salad?’ But you can just be like, ‘Girl please, it’s delicious.’ (Okay don’t do that…)
Tea – Green, black, chai, white, or whatever. Tea is a great thing to have for those early mornings or late nights. Nothing is better than curling up with a cup of tea and doing some homework. Oh yeah, the not doing homework part would make it better 😉
Udi’s Bread (basically any kind of bread) – Carbs! I love carbs J You can use this bread as toast, for a sandwich, or whatever your heart desires. But rather than buying bread, you can always take some (sneakily) from the dining hall. Wrap some up in a napkin and walk on out of the door. No biggie 😉
Variety – You don’t have to have salads everyday. That would be just plain boring. The way I (kind of) keep my sanity is by using my mind when it comes to meals. I look at the food in the cafeteria and think about how I could use it in a way people normally wouldn’t think of. But if you do have a salad everyday, you don’t have to have the same veggies and dressing. You can change it up a bit. You know what they say, “Variety is the spice of life!”
Water Bottles – Why buy plastic water bottles when you can just keep refilling your kanteen??
Xylophone – Just kidding, you really don’t need a xylophone. I just couldn’t think of anything that started with X. But if you do have one, you will be the life of the party.
Yogurt – This is a great way to get protein + calcium as a grab and go snack between classes. My two favorites are: chobani and fage 0%. (They sell these both as Costco so I am able to get them for a decent price.)
Zzzz – Sleep sleep sleeeeep! Take advantage of the sleep you can get in. By the time you hang out with friends, do homework, and hang out with friends again, it could be very late and that 8am class could be getting closer and closer.
But remember…the most important thing is to have FUN!! Enjoy every moment because the time will fly by and college is a huge part of your life.
Thank you all so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to stop on over at Health Freak College Girl and say hi!
I love your alphabet Haley!!! Many of those are staples in my life too!
Hope you enjoyed!
