A collection of the best eats and treats from my first trip abroad to Europe! Scrumptious snacks, delicious dinners, decadent desserts, and more!
On Monday, I recapped the sights and scenes from my trip to Europe. Today is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD (so I am linking up with WIAW of course!). I know you’re probably pretty excited and I am pretty pumped to share as well.
To be honest, looking back through my pictures, I was a little surprised at how few food photos I took. Usually I am one to snap every meal and snack but on this trip I was much more focused on the experiences, my fellow travelers, and really taking everything in! So I am actually sort of happy that I am lacking in the food photo department.
With that said, I did manage to get a few shots to give you an idea of some of the food I ate while abroad and I’ll supplement with some words on what else I was eating.
So let’s get right into the snacks, meals, and fun foods I ate during my two-week whirlwind tour!
I’ll let you know, I didn’t go abroad empty-handed, and I didn’t come back empty-handed either (check Monday’s post for a list of souvenirs I brought back for my family!).
Being the snacker that I am, I packed a few staples to get me through between meals. Especially since I heard that Europe is not big on snacking. I knew with our long, busy days thought that I’d need some extra fuel. So in terms of snacks, I brought things like…

+protein powders, Amazing Grass Chocolate Powder, and instant oatmeal packages
Snacks I bought while I was there included…
+yogurt, skyr, and other forms of delicious creamy dairy
+bread from local bakeries
+lattes, espresso, and cappuccinos
+fresh cheese slices
+crackers and crispbreads from local supermarkets
+museli and granola
Not to mention lots of samples at local Farmer’s Markets we stumbled upon throughout our travels…
Now onto the main meals and fun foods I ate…
+copious amounts of pasta
+authentic stews and rice dishes
+fresh vegan foods from a the world’s second largest beer garden
+caprese sandwiches from service stops
+hearty, creamy soups
+too many scoops of gelato (especially coconut and mocha flavors!)
+pastries and pretzels from local bakeries
+fresh seafood salads
+brined eggplant and baked eggplant parmesan
+sushi! (only once, but I was craving it so much!)
+wine and champagne
I also found some fun familiar foods in a few shops I went into! 😉
Overall, I was so impressed with the freshness and simplicity of everything I ate in Europe! Every different country and even city had something different and unique to offer. I feel like I did a good job of sampling the local cuisine while making sure I was fueled up for days full of touring and sightseeing. I also had a lot of FUN with my food. Food was truly a memorable part of the experience and I am so happy I was able to take part in and enjoy it fully.
Sure I have some special dietary needs, likes, and wants…but overall, I was proud and satisfied with how I did on this trip. Healthy travel can be hard for ANYONE but sometimes it’s just best to let go a bit, realize you’re experiencing ‘once in a lifetime’ moments, and that it’s best to just ENJOY yourself free of guilt, worry, or shame.
Of course there were times when I felt overstuffed and like I had eaten too much. But I can honestly say I LOVED everything I ate, took my time eating, and fully savored every meal. THAT is mindful eating. And sometimes mindful, intuitive eating means eating for pure enjoyment and eating past the point of fullness. Ya know what? I am totally okay with that. In fact, I think I need to do it more often!
As you can see, this trip taught me a lot and gave me a lot of new insights into my relationship with food, exercise, spontaneity, and flexibility in general. Overall, it was a great, enlightening experience that I really have no complaints or regrets about!

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten lately? For me…KABOCHA. I missed it so much while I was away!!! HAHA. Typical.
