A What I Ate Wednesday feature sharing some non-traditional meals and snacks as I listen to my hunger cues.
In my last WIAW post, I discussed how my food cravings tend to change with the seasons. Well another thing I’ve noticed is that my hungers cues change as well!
Our summer has been SUPER hot. Not that I am complaining (at all!), but the heat definitely has done a number on my hunger levels during the day. Whereas I used to eat pretty regularly sized meals at standard intervals throughout the day, I’ve found that lately I’ve been having one huge breakfast in the morning, a few snacks throughout the day, another big meal at night and then a snack before bed.
I always wake up hungry, so breakfast is never an issue, but for some reason when the temperatures are at their peak during the day, I just don’t have much of an appetite. So I’ve been forgoing lunch for two smaller snacks. Additionally, since I haven’t been able to run all year, I haven’t been much of morning exerciser anymore. Instead, I’ve been going in the middle of the day which makes a snack before and after more optimal for fueling my workout.
The biggest thing I am learning is how to really listen to my hunger and fullness levels. Since I struggle with overeating, I feel like I am always walking a fine line between eating a normal amount and going overboard. It’s definitely a learning process each day, but I am determined to give myself grace and treat myself with kindness as I work back towards health. There are no labels on my current eating patterns and I am not following any diets. I think the best thing for me right now is really tuning back in with what my body needs instead of just indulging in whatever it wants for a sense of comfort.
It’s hard, but I am getting pretty fed up with the bad habits I’ve adopted, as well as all the health repercussions they are causing me. So I am determined to get back to a place of health and happiness. I am totally at that point of feeling “sick of being sick” if that makes sense. Plus, I have the end of goal being able to run again, and when I am able to start that back up I want to make sure I am fueling myself healthily instead of overfeeding it and harming like I have been for the past year. It’s time to stop using food as a coping mechanism and start using it purely for health!
