Looking for a quick, healthy breakfast for on-go-eating? This Brain-Boosting Breakfast Trail Mix has all the nutrients your need to fuel up and feel energized for the day. Whole grains, healthy fats, protein, and even a bit of chocolate!
With my trip to Europe less than 3 weeks away it’s time to start thinking about packing and getting everything ready. That includes snacks and breakfasts!
A few meals on the trip are covered but for the most part we are left to our devices when it comes to breakfasts and snacks. Since I’m already spending a fortune on this trip (and the dollar isn’t doing too well overseas right now!), I’ve been brainstorming ways to get in a good amount of food without having to buy a lot while I’m abroad.
One things for sure, I need something quick, nutrient dense, energizing, and easy to eat on-the-go! This trip is going to be GO-GO-GO. Most days we wake up at 6am and hit the road for a full day of adventuring and sightseeing. I’ll need to have proper fuel for all the walking we’ll be doing, ya know?
With all these factors in mind, I’ve been brainstorming different options I can pack with me for the trip. Bars? Sure, but they don’t have all the nutrients I need. Nuts? Good fat source, but not complete. Dried fruit? Well, the carbs and sugars are there but not much else. What about cereal? Again, has some components I need, but not everything.
Then it hit me! TRAIL MIX. A combination of all the ingredients and nutrients I need in a packable, easy-to-eat form.
And lucky, enough I was had a good source of inspiration for this new mix since I had just picked up a new-to-me cereal from Sam’s Club…Ancient Grains + Multi Grain Cheerios!
I’ve been a Cheerios lover since my toddler days (seriously who wasn’t!?) and have been buying the regular or Multi Grain Cheerios for years now. When I saw that Cheerios made their cereal even ‘better for you’ by adding Ancient Grains, I immediately grabbed a box! Not only do these Cheerios contain the classic whole grain oats of the original, but they also have added kamut, sorghum, spelt, and millet. Gang’s all here! 🙂
They’re low-fat, contain 12 vitamins and minerals, and have 17 grams of whole grain per serving!
Being the cereal lover that I am, I decided to use the Ancient Grains + Multi Grain Cheerios as the base my new breakfast trail mix. The cereal provides my complex carbohydrates and with the addition of raw seeds for Omega-3’s and healthy fats, unsweetened blueberries for sweetness and antioxidants, and some dark chocolate covered coffee beans for an energy boost (and for fun!), this trail-mix has all my bases covered.
- 2 cups Ancient Grains + Multi Grain Cheerios
- ¼ cup raw pumpkin seeds
- ¼ cup raw sunflower seeds
- ¼ cup dried blueberries
- ¼ cup dark chocolate covered coffee beans
- Mix all ingredients together so they are evenly distributed! Serve with milk, yogurt, or all on its own.
Sweet, crunchy, even a little chocolatey? What more could you ask for in a trail mix! Not to mention the health benefits and good nutrients it provides.
Whether you eat it on its own, with milk, or over yogurt, you’ll feel more awake and ready to tackle the day as soon as you eat a serving. Brain-boosting, body energizing, and SO DARN TASTY. I love all the different flavors and textures throughout!
Now I am totally prepared for my trip! Well, on the food front that is…. 😉
